The Blot Is Your Homeboy

Two years ago The Blot bought one of his favorite T-shirts of all time. Before I go on let me preface that in no way am I a Dallas Mavericks fan, but the shirt was such great bull and so creative I just had to buy one. The shirt in question is my trusty blue Dirk Is My Homeboy shirt which you can still buy by checking out the official Dirk Is My Homeboy MySpace page.

Dirk Is My Homeboy T-Shirt - Dirk Nowitzki
It’s a spoof of the trendy fad started back in 2004 (by Kanye West I believe) to wear the old school styled Jesus Is My Homeboy shirt but replaces Jesus’ face with the face of 2007 NBA MVP Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks. Since I thought the idea of the Dirk is My Homeboy T-shirt was so great, I’ve been keeping eyes peeled on the web for the next Jesus Is My Homeboy rip-off to add to my T-shirt collection. Yesterday was the day I found not one, but two worthy additions.

The first shirt I found while surfing the web also happens to tie in nicely with all of the recent media attention this person has been garnering over the past two years. It is my great pleasure to introduce to you the Obama Is My Homeboy T-shirt, which you can still purchase at NoStarClothing.com. Both this shirt and the next one I’m going to mention only come in black, which is kind of disappointing since I’m more of a random color type of guy. But I’ll learn to make do since the shirt is pretty cool. On the plus side the caricature of the Illinois Senator does look remarkably like him, much better than some of the other Barack Obama shirts I’ve seen on the web. I tried finding a decent Hillary Is My Homegirl shirt to be fair to both sides but the only shirts I could find were way too horrible to post.

And finally I’m happy to report for all you hip-hop fans out there that I found a Weezy Is My Homeboy shirt at Mix Unit’s hip-hop shop. Now this shirt I think I’m going to have to buy ASAP as it immortalizes one of the most prolific rappers of the past few years, Lil’ Wayne. Coming from the south you can’t go a minute listening to the radio without hearing a Lil’ Wayne track or a cameo by him on someone else’s song. I think even after all this time I can still listen to Weezy make it rain all day long.

Watchmen - First Look

Watchmen Comic-Con Teaser Promotional Poster
Watchmen, one of the seminal comic books of the modern era, is being brought to the screen in exactly one year from today on March 6th, 2009 by director Zack Snyder (300). To mark the one year milestone Snyder has posted on his Watchmen production blog a sneak peek at five Watchmen characters. (link) If the movie sticks anywhere close to the comics this should turn into a huge 300 size movie event next year. Watchmen stars Malin Akerman as Laurie Juspeczyk (Silk Spectre), Billy Crudup as Jon Osterman (Dr. Manhattan), Matthew Goode as Adrian Veidt (Ozymandias), Jackie Earle Haley as Walter Kovacs (Rorschach), Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Edward Blake (The Comedian) and Patrick Wilson as Dan Dreiberg (Nite Owl).

Watchmen, written by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, was a twelve issue comic book maxi-series published by DC Comics in 1986-87. While published by DC comics, Watchmen was set outside of its comic universe in a more realistic setting. While this is probably too much information for many of you, Moore was originally set to use characters from Charlton Comics, a rival comic book company DC had recently purchased and had no plans for their characters. Once DC determined it wanted to integrate the Charlton Comics characters (Blue Beetle, The Question, Captain Atom) into their own universe, Moore was forced to create new characters but based them closely to the original Charlton heroes (Nite Owl, Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan respectively).

After completion Watchmen was later re-released as a trade paperback and became on of the first really popular trade paperbacks christened a "graphic novel." You all know how I feel about the term graphic novel, and while the Watchmen movie will be referred to many times by the media as “based on a graphic novel,” please be aware when the book was first published it was just a lowly comic book like all the rest. Although I can see why they won’t want to refer to it as “based on a comic book” since it is definitely not your typical super hero story. It is one of the best crafted stories I’ve ever read and has won numerous awards including the 1988 Hugo Award and is listed on Time Magazine’s list of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present. (link) If you can’t tell already Watchmen is one of the The Blot’s all time favorite comics and I’m extremely excited for the movie. Thanks to News-a-rama.com for the heads up on this!

Superhero Movie Theatrical Poster

From the creators of Scary Movie and The Naked Gun comes Superhero Movie, a spoof of the craze of the big comic book based summer blockbuster. You know when I was younger I loved movies like this, especially The Naked Gun, Hot Shots! and even the first Scary Movie. But once the Wayans Brothers left the genre the spoof movie really went down hill fast.

In fact, the line of spoof movies created and directed by Aaron Seltzer over the past few years have been down right awful. Seltzer’s movies include Date Movie, Epic Movie, and this year’s dreadful Meet the Spartans. While Seltzer thankfully isn’t involved with Superhero Movie, I don’t see it being that much better than Meet the Spartans due to its being written and directed by Craig Mazin, the writer of Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4 (which were obviously the worst installments in the Scary Movie franchise). But, I do love a good superhero movie and Tracy Morgan is usually hilarious, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Superhero Movie will usher in a renaissance of the classic spoof movie. Then again, there is zero chance I see this in the theaters. I guess I should go ahead and add it to my queue for delivery sometime in the next few months.
