Cannonball Marvel Comics Mini Bust by Bowen Designs

The Blot doesn’t blog about traditional statues or busts all that often, but every once in a while one catches my eye and I feel compelled to write about it. As a kid The Blot was a huge New Mutants fan and my favorite New Mutant was their leader and co-founder Sam Guthrie a.k.a. Cannonball! Named for his mutant ability to fly through the air like a jet engine on fire, The Blot would pretty much buy any Marvel comic book that featured Cannonball no matter how small of a cameo it might be.

I always hoped one day Sam would graduate into the big leagues and become a full fledged member of the X-Men. I especially loved those old New Mutant issues where the team would bust out their “adult” uniforms to fill in for the X-Men when the team would go missing. Sadly, by the time Cannonball finally became a member of the main X-Men team, I had pretty much given up reading X books. Well, Cannonball is now back with his friends as a member of the New Mutants, and this new mini bust by Bowen Designs immortalizes Sam’s look as leader of the X-Men’s junior team.

The Cannonball Marvel Comics Mini Bust by Bowen Designs stands 7” tall and was sculpted by Troy McDevitt. Each mini bust retails for $80 each and is currently available for purchase from specialty stores everywhere.

The Hundreds x Garbage Pail Kids Collection

Last week The Hundreds released a new collaboration with Topps featuring one of The Blot’s all time favorite trading card series, Garbage Pail Kids! It feels like the Garbage Pail Kids are definitely having a resurgence in 2011, as I’ve seen their names pop up a number times in our little corner of the art world, and it couldn’t have happened to a better ‘80s property.

Originally created as a spin-off of Topp’s Wacky Packages in 1985, Garbage Pail Kids quickly skyrocketed into everyone’s childhood memories through trading cards, stickers and key chains. What’s really cool about this collection is that it’s the first collaboration in Garbage Pail Kids’ 26-year history of creating disgustingly hilarious and outrageous characters. The Hundreds x Garbage Pail Kids Collection consists of five special edition The Hundreds themed characters, a proud addition to the over two dozen Garbage Pail Kids series created over the years.

The Hundreds x Topps Garbage Pail Kids includes “Adam Bomb”, which consists of The Hundreds’ signature character with an exploding head; “Bloggy Bobby”, a character with a melted face due to a technology overload; “Burger Ben”, a character chowing down on a greasy burger; “Stinky Scotty”, a character with bright blue hair, a skateboard, and several indications that he reeks; and “Trashy Ashley” a character wrapped in backstage passes and drenched in booze.

This killer collaboration includes THxGPK t-shirts ($36), snapback hats ($32), crewnecks ($64) and keychains ($5), all of which can be purchased at all of The Hundreds retail locations, The Hundreds online stores and select specialty stores worldwide. And be sure to keep your eyes out for the super rare The Hundreds x Garbage Pail Kids Doubles, which are the twins to the The Hundreds Garbage Pail Kids characters and feature an alternate identity. These THxGPK Doubles are being printed in extremely low numbers (less than 20 of each Double), and will be randomly assorted throughout all distribution.

“Sleeping Beauty” Once Upon A Time Screen Print by Kevin Tong

It’s Thursday, so you know what that means…a new release in Mondo’s Once Upon A Time Screen Print Series by Kevin Tong! This week’s print is based on the Grimm’s Fairy Tale “Sleeping Beauty” and is actually pretty cool. I especially love the juxtaposition of Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming’s faces. I just wish ABC’s Once Upon A Time was as good as these screen prints!

Each Once Upon A Time 18"x24" hand numbered screen print by Kevin Tong will have a Standard Edition with metallic ink and a limited edition run size of 225 prints, plus 95 metallic Gold Variants. The Standard Edition “Sleeping Beauty” screen print will retail for $40, while the Gold Variant will retail for $65.
