Coming Soon: Muttpop's Tequila Pop Culture Edition

Sadly, this is fifth and final installment of The Blot’s inaugural weekly series on Comic Book Inspired Designer Vinyl Figure Colorways. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed doing it, and I am planning on doing another week long feature in the very near future.

Muttpop - Tequila Vinyl Figure and PackagingToday’s comic book inspired designer vinyl figure colorway is the only one included in this week long series that has yes to come out. Over the past two or three years, Muttpop has become almost as well known for their amazing colorways as they are for their Lucha Libre vinyl figures. Tequila, the first Lucha Libre character released in vinyl form, has a huge year ahead of him with 3 to 4 different colorways set to be released. Of course it is Tequila’s Pop Culture colorway that really has The Blot excited.

Where’s Waldo Tequila?
Can you spot the two Tequila Pop Culture Edition figures in the picture above?

As you can see from the picture below, Tequila’s Pop Culture colorway is based on the Marvel Comics super hero the Incredible Hulk’s color scheme of green skin and purple clothing. I warned you it was a popular colorway!

Muttpop - Tequila Pop Culture Edition Vinyl Figure (Incredible Hulk Colorway)
Lucha Libre - TequilaEvery Tequila figure released to this point is already sold out, but with so many different colorways coming out in the next year getting one of the new Tequila figures shouldn’t be a problem. No price or run size for the Tequila Pop Culture Edition figure has been released yet, but what is known is that there will be a hard to find Tequila Pop Culture variant colorway created as well. I’m still trying to find out if the variant figure will be randomly inserted blind box style or if it will be sold separately in extremely limited quantities. The Pop Culture variant figure is rumored to be based on another popular character but whether it is based on a hero or a villain is anyone’s guess.

Iron Ape by Dez Einswell

This is the fourth installment of The Blot’s five part series on Comic Book Inspired Designer Vinyl Figure Colorways.

Dez Einswell x XLarge Silverback Gorilla Vinyl FigureDez Einswell’s Iron Ape is the newest colorway of Einswell’s 8 inch vinyl figure Dez Einswell x XLarge Silverback Gorilla, a collaboration with clothing company XLarge. This 2008 San Diego Comic Con exclusive is pretty incredible and even includes the custom mask seen below to help transform Dez’ Silverback Gorilla into a real Iron Ape. Iron Ape’s colorway is based on the Marvel Comics super hero Iron Man and it really came out at the perfect time, hot on the heels of the live action summer blockbuster, Iron Man.

Dez Einswell x XLarge Iron Ape Vinyl Figure
Dez Einswell x XLarge Silverback Gorilla 2007 SDCC Hulking ColorwayThe Blot has much love for Dez Einswell due to his immense dedication to the comic book inspired colorway. This is actually his second San Diego Comic Con exclusive super hero inspired colorway, the first coming in 2007. How great is that, two super hero colorways in a row and both came out perfectly. His 2007 SDCC exclusive was a Dez Einswell x XLarge Silverback Gorilla Hulking colorway, which paid homage to Marvel’s Incredible Hulk by having the figure’s skin green and clothing purple. It seems like the Hulk has an extremely popular color scheme doesn’t he? Hopefully Einswell will continue this series of colorways with another comic book inspired one next summer.

Dez Einswell x XLarge Iron Ape Vinyl Figure Front & Back
The original Dez Einswell x XLarge Silverback Gorilla vinyl figure is limited to 300 figures and retails for $85. While Iron Ape was originally released as a 2008 San Diego Comic Con exclusive, it will be released soon for purchase world wide on Einswell’s website DoodleBarn.com. I still haven’t heard a confirmed run size for the Iron Ape figure, but I believe it will retail for around $85 as well.

Stealth Moneygrip by kaNO

This is Part 3 of The Blot’s 5 part series on Comic Book Inspired Designer Vinyl Figure Colorways.

kaNO - The OG Moneygrip Designer Vinyl FigureThe Blot has been waiting to talk about this particular vinyl figure for a while now. kaNO’s Moneygrip is a really unique platform and I have absolutely loved all of the line’s different colorways. Even the customs I’ve seen have blown me away, and that’s really saying something because the Moneygrip platform is somewhat limiting as to surface space. But the best Moneygrip I’ve ever seen is a production piece entitled Stealth Moneygrip.

kaNO - Stealth Moneygrip Vinyl Figure
kaNO's G.I. Joe Inspired Stealth Moneygrip (Destro Colorway)Why you might ask is the Stealth Moneygrip so damn cool? Because the Stealth colorway is based on the greatest arms dealer the world has ever know, Destro. kaNO has taken the coolest Cobra villain of them all and transformed him perfectly into a Moneygrip. It’s all there, the shiny metallic head, the all black outfit and even the pimp 70’s style popped out red collar. The only thing the character is missing is Destro’s signature ruby red pendant.

kaNO - Stealth Moneygrip Front & BackOk, I know some readers might balk at my inclusion of the Moneygrip Stealth colorway into The Blot’s Comic Book Inspired Colorways Week, but to me G.I. Joe is a comic book property. While G.I. Joe obviously started as just a toy line, in the 80’s the Real American Hero toy line evolved into so much more (including a successful cartoon and a popular, long running comic book series). In fact, even after the cartoons were canceled and the toy lines became almost non-existent, it was the comic book lines from Marvel, Image and Devil’s Due that kept the property alive. Therefore, I am proud to include this Destro tribute colorway as part of this week long feature.

kaNO's Line of Moneygrip Designer Vinyl Figures
All of kaNO’s Moneygrip designer vinyl figures stand 5 inches tall. The OG Moneygrip retails for around $50 and is limited to just 250 pieces, while the Stealth Moneygrip retails for between $45 to $55 dollars and has a limited run of just 100 figures.

The Incredible MD by TobyHK

Welcome to Day 2 of The Blot’s Comic Book Inspired Designer Vinyl Figure Colorway Week!

holy MD by TobyHKThe incredible MD is an Incredible Hulk inspired colorway of Hong Kong artist tobyHK’s boxer, holy MD. Sadly, I don’t know too much about tobyHK but you can read his official bio here. What I do know is that holy MD is the newest figure from his Dumb Dummies series. The first Dumb Dummies figure was actually based on tobyHK himself, but it is his heavyweight boxer that’s really got The Blot excited.

Even if tobyHK hadn’t released a colorway based on the Marvel Comics super hero I’d still be a fan of the holy MD vinyl figure. But, when you apply the Hulk’s classic color scheme (green skin and purple pants) to turn the mild mannered boxer holy MD into the incredible MD, well then the figure instantly becomes a must get for The Blot.

incredible MD by TobyHK
The best part of these limited edition figures are their size. While both the holy MD and the incredible MD retail for $100 each, you definitely get tons of value when you take into consideration how big the figures are. Both versions are 12 inches tall, 12 inches in width and 10 inches deep, so if you’re considering picking up one of these great figures make sure you have plenty of shelf space! The holy MD is limited to just 200 pieces while the incredible MD has an even smaller production run of only 100 figures.

Keel Haul Cleg Red Colorway by Craola

Here is The Blot’s first entry for Comic Book Inspired Designer Vinyl Figure Colorway Week. Enjoy!

To be honest, I’ve never been a huge fan of Greg “Craola” Simkins’ Cap’n Rotnclaw and Keel Haul Cleg PVC vinyl figures produced by STRANGEco. They are just a little too abstract for my taste. But when I heard STRANGEco would be releasing a super secret, limited edition Keel Haul Cleg colorway at Craola’s “It Wanders West” show at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles last Thursday, I knew I was going to have to get one. Not because red is my favorite color, but because this particular colorway has Keel Haul Cleg painted as one of my all time favorite DC super heroes, The Flash.

Keel Haul Cleg Red Colorway by Craola
While the red and yellow color scheme looks good on the Keel Haul Cleg figure, The Blot’s favorite part has to be The Flash’s logo on its chest. I think the Red colorway actually makes Keel Haul Cleg look fast, even if he does run around on crab legs. The Keel Haul Cleg Red colorway is going to look very sweet next to my other comic book inspired designer vinyl figures.

Keel Haul Cleg Red Colorway by Craola
Keel Haul Cleg is available now on a first come, first serve basis from G1988 for $60 each. The figure is 7 inches tall and is limited to just 300 figures.

Comic Book Inspired Designer Vinyl Figure Colorways Week

The Blot is excited to start my very first week long feature on The Blot Says… Every morning this week, The Blot is going to be posting an article on a vinyl figure that was released in the past year (or will be released soon) with a comic book inspired colorway. If you’re a long time reader of The Blot Says… then you know of my obsession of all things comic books and more importantly, comic book inspired art, clothing and vinyl figures.

Muttpop - Dr. Destruction Wild Edition Designer Vinyl Figure
There is nothing more exciting than a good tribute, mash-up, or crossover release, and fans seem to be really gobbling up these types of designer toys. I already posted on one of my all time favorite comic book inspired colorways, Muttpop’s Dr. Destruction Wild Edition, so I won’t be including that awesome figure in this week’s feature articles. But, I wanted to include it here nonetheless. I’ve personally been very excited for the release of each of the five figures I’ll be highlighting this week and I hope you enjoy them as well!

Be on the lookout for The Blot’s first post in this week’s Comic Book Inspired Designer Vinyl Figure Colorway series very shortly.
