A Fanboys Movie Release Update

Shockingly, Fanboys just can’t be stopped! After almost a month in theaters, Fanboys is now expanding to eleven new markets over the next two weekends. (link) It really is amazing to see the fan response to this movie and to know our support is helping the film grow and reach markets The Blot once never thought possible. As of this Friday it’s even playing in my home state of Alabama! I've been telling all my friends back home for weeks that they had to go see this movie, and now, surprisingly, they actually can.

Fanboys Unite! Movie Expands To 10 New Markets Today

The Blot knew The Weinstein Company couldn’t keep a good movie down! Aint It Cool News reports that Fanboys “per screen business, with basically no AD support at all, has been strong enough that the powers that be at The Weinstein Company are doing a further roll out into other college markets.” (link) How great is that!?! While it’s not the full blown release many Star Wars fans were hoping for, at least now a greater audience will have the opportunity to see this movie on the big screen.

Today, Friday, February 20th, Fanboys will be officially released in the following 10 cities/regions: Boston, Washington, D.C., Detroit, Atlanta, Phoenix, Orlando, Daytona Beach, FL, Hartford, CT, New Haven, CT, Raleigh-Durham, NC, and Columbus, OH. While Fanboys will continue to play in Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle-Tacoma, Houston, and Austin, as of yesterday the movie’s run in the theaters has ended in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

If you live in one of those four regions and missed out on seeing Fanboys don’t blame The Blot, I told you to go out and see it immediately two weeks ago! If Fanboys is still not playing in an area where you live, fear not. The movie should be released on DVD and Blu-Ray soon enough.

The Blot Finally Sees Fanboys

After years of waiting, The Blot has finally seen Fanboys. In fact, I just got back from the theater a few minutes and I don’t care what anyone says, it was great! For the longest time I’ve been hearing rumors that while the movie’s script was amazing, the film’s execution was lacking. USAToday even gave it 2 and ½ stars, but I left the theater extremely happy and entertained. As a huge Kevin Smith fan the best compliment I can give Fanboys is that it really reminded me of one of his mid-career movies, with its numerous surprise cameos, Star Wars and pop culture references galore, and the occasional over the top crass joke.

What I loved about Fanboys the most was that it was a fitting tribute to geek fandom without going crossing the line like so many other movies have. If you’re a Star Wars fan and live in one of 8 select cities in which the film is currently playing walk, no run to your local cinema and make sure you see Fanboys this weekend! Who knows, maybe its opening weekend box office numbers will be high enough to garner a wider release. That way, Star Wars fans across the country can experience this awesome Star Wars road trip movie the way it was intended, on the big screen.

Fanboys In Theaters Tomorrow, Friday February 6th

Fanboys everywhere rejoice! The movie we’ve all been waiting for will finally debut in theaters tomorrow. It’s been a really long time coming, but Fanboys has successfully escaped from the clutches of the evil Weinstein Company and will begin screening in select theaters across America in a matter of hours.

Sadly, even though Fanboys has gotten out of post-production purgatory, The Weinstein Co. is still only giving it a limited nationwide release. This means unless you live in one of a handful of major cities you’re probably going to have to wait to see Fanboys until it’s released on DVD.

The cities where Fanboys will be playing starting tomorrow are Austin, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle. Thankfully, The Blot lives in one of these 8 cities and you can rest assured I’ll be seeing the film this weekend to help boost Fanboys’ opening weekend box office. If you also live in one of the cities above check your local movie listings and make sure you go out this weekend to support the little movie could.

Fanboys - New Official Trailer

The Blot might have spoken a little too soon earlier this week about the demise of the movie Fanboys, because it’s starting to look more and more like the film will actually be released sometime in the beginning of 2009. First we saw the release of a new Fanboys one-sheet promo poster and now we have the first official Fanboys trailer. If I wasn’t so shocked, I’d say The Weinstein Company has began an actual marketing campaign to promote the film.

The trailer is just plain sick and has me even more excited to see this indie ode to all things Star Wars. If the trailer below doesn’t have you totally geeked out about the movie then I don’t know what will! Just trust me and watch it:

If you’d like to see a larger, higher quality version of the Fanboys trailer above, click here.

According to The Weinstein Company’s official Fanboys website, fanboys everywhere can expect the movie in theaters on February 6, 2009.

Fanboys - New One Sheet Movie Poster

The once promising indie film Fanboys, a movie set in 1998 that tells the story of a group of friends who decide to break into Skywalker Ranch and steal an early print of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace so that a friend suffering from cancer can view the film before his death, has released an all new theatrical one-sheet movie poster that parodies the promo poster for the Judd Apatow comedy, The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

At this point, who knows if the movie will ever actually be released in theaters because its distributer, The Weinstein Company (TWC), has been consistently pushing back its release date for almost two years while trying to change everything about the film. I know Fanboys was close to being released in 2007 before TWC decided they wanted to cut the friend dying from cancer storyline and bring the entire cast back together for some serious re-shoots. When and if we ever get to see the final product is anybody’s guess, but I have read that the film in its original incarnation is every fanboys’ dream.

Fanboys - Kristen Bell as Zoe in Slave Leia Metal Bikini CostumeThe film stars Kristen Bell, Jay Baruchel, Dan Fogler, Sam Huntington and Chris Marquette and has a sick list of cameos, including Kevin Smith, William Shatner, Seth Rogen, Ethan Suplee and many more familiar faces, including more former Star Wars actors than you shake a stick at. The movie was even blessed by Mr. Star Wars himself, George Lucas, and yet still The Weinstein Company refuses to release the movie. The only promising sign is the release of this new theatrical one-sheet movie poster with a very Yoda-like tag line at the bottom. One would think that if TWC is finally putting some money into marketing the film that they’re going to have to release it eventually, right?

As of now Fanboys, directed by Kyle Newman, is scheduled for a February 6, 2009 release.
