Frank Miller's Sin City “Marv” Vinyl Figure by Eric So
How in the world has it been 10 years since Dark Horse Comics first teamed up with artist Eric So release the “Hong Kong” Hellboy vinyl figure!?! And why has it taken so long for Dark Horse and Eric to team up again to release a new comic book inspired figure? Eric So’s Hellboy is a art toy classic, and incredibly hard to find. So collectors better not sleep on his newest collaboration with Dark Horse, Marv from Frank Miller’s Sin City!
This limited edition oversized vinyl figure of Marv is more of a re-invention than a reproduction. While it is clear that Miller's graphics inform the piece, it is more of a signpost along the way than the end of the journey. The Eric So touches abound from the detailing of the trench coat to the sharp angles and odd proportions of the character's features. As we all know, Marv knows how to take a punch, and has the bandages to prove it. Dark Horse is providing a pack of band-aid style stickers with each figure, and the collector can affix them to Marv as they like. What a cool accessory!
Sin City’s Marv Vinyl Figure by Eric So stands 13” tall and is limited to just 950 pieces. Collectors can pre-order one now from Entertainment Earth for $149.99 here.

With Sin City 2 being released in theaters this August, there’s no better time for a new line of toys based on Frank Miller’s landmark Dark Horse comic book series than right now! Frank Miller’s Sin City Inspired Threadless T-Shirt "Sin City"
The Blot loves the fact that Threadless constantly pumps out new and creative comic book inspired t-shirts. While “Sin City” continues that trend of new comic book inspired tees, it’s definitely not all that creative. In fact, it looks like it could have been copied straight out of a Frank Miller comic book. I’m not saying it is a copy, just that there doesn’t seem to be that much creativity behind it.
Nevertheless, as a huge fan of Miller’s Sin City I think this shirt is pretty cool. I just hope Miller is getting some sort of residual from Threadless as this design looks like a scene pulled out from the Sin City live action movie adaptation.
Inspired by Frank Miller’s seminal comic book Sin City, the Threadless t-shirt “Sin City” comes printed on a black t-shirt and is currently on sale at Threadless.com in honor Halloween for just $10 (it’s normally $18)! The shirt comes in both guys and girls styles, sizes S-2XL.

The Spirit Final One Sheet Movie Poster
We’re just a few weeks away from the world premiere of Frank Miller’s adaptation of Will Eisner’s The Spirit. In honor of the movie’s impending release, The Blot is excited to bring to you The Spirit’s final theatrical one sheet movie poster, which should be plastered in movie theaters around the US as we speak. The promos are airing nonstop on TV these days and the movie actually looks pretty good. How creepy does Samuel L. Jackson look as The Octopus? Sadly though, my guess is that most of America has already tuned out on this movie ever since that first trailer aired way back when.

If this movie can even pull off Sin City type success I would imagine everyone involved would be thrilled. Not sure why I feel this way, but I just don’t see this film pulling in super hero themed summer blockbuster type numbers. As much as I love Frank Miller, I believe his vision pulls in a very niche market and I can’t imagine this move even doing 300 winter blockbuster type numbers. But I could be wrong!
The Spirit premieres nationwide on Christmas 2008.

Portland State University and Dark Horse Comics Open First Comic Book Archive
This week has turned out to be a pretty cool news week in the world of comic books. The Portland Monthly Magazine is reporting that Portland State University’s Branford P. Millar Library will house the country’s very first comic book archive. Dark Horse Comics, home to Star Wars, Hellboy and Sin City, has “so far donated over 3,000 volumes to the library’s shelves (that’s three copies of every title the company has ever produced), making PSU the first university in the country to keep such an archive.” (link) I think this is wonderful news and it is about time that the comic book industry is given the respect it deserves as both works of literature and art.
For those of you wondering how such a collection ended up at Portland State University, it turns out that Dark Horse, the third largest U.S. publisher of comic books after Marvel and DC, was founded in 1986 by two PSU alumni, Mike Richardson and Neil Hankerson. In the article, librarian Helen H. Spalding is quoted as saying the Dark Horse Comics archive “is an important international research collection, it holds an interest for those studying American pop culture, gender studies, violence in literature—almost anything. We wanted to make the university a hub of comic-book studies.” (link)
If you’re in the Portland area then I highly recommend stopping by the PSU Millar Library and checking out the new Dark Horse section! I’d love to hear what it’s like and will one day hopefully get to see for myself. You can expect to see comics such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Concrete, Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, Barb Wire, The Goon, Grendel, Groo, The Mask, Usagi Yojimbo, and Aliens in the newly created comic book archive.
