Falling Skies Season 2 Premieres Tonight on TNT

Falling Skies Season 2 Banner - Season 2 Cast Photo

In what was definitely the biggest surprise of the summer of 2011, The Blot found myself obsessed with TNT’s sci-fi drama Falling Skies. Initially I only tuned in because of Noah Wyle. I was a huge ER fan growing up and I’ve enjoyed his series of The Librarian films on TNT. Plus I’m a sci-fi buff so why not give it a shot. What I found was a smarter, more enjoyable show than I ever could have expected. It set the bar so high of what a sci-fi TV show could be, it even put FOX’s Terra Nova (and its huge budget) to shame.

With a large ensemble cast, Falling Skies tells the story of a group of survivors trying to fight against an invading race of aliens who have enslaved the planet earth. While the story was interesting, what really put this show over the top for me was the introduction of the Colin Cunningham’s villainous John Pope. In the same vein as BSG’s Gaius Baltar, Pope is the type of morally ambiguous character you hate to love and love to hate. A must have for any show of this ilk. In fact, Season 1 really gelled when Cunningham’s Pope took on a bigger role in the show. Suffice it to say, the creative team behind Falling Skies recognized that as well and Cunningham has been featured prominently in the promotion of Falling Skies Season 2.

Official Description: Falling Skies opens in the chaotic aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world completely incapacitated. In the months since the initial invasion, the few survivors have banded together outside major cities to begin the difficult task of fighting back. The show focuses on the resilience of the survivors and their determination to maintain their humanity when all else has been destroyed. It is a tale of endurance, commitment and courage in which everyday people are called upon to become heroes. They may be outmatched, outnumbered and outgunned, but nothing can beat the human spirit. Most of all, the series is about the ties that bind people together in the most difficult of circumstances.

Memphis Beat starring Jason Lee Premieres Tonight on TNT

To be honest, The Blot has pretty low expectations for TNT’s newest hour long drama Memphis Beat. But while the reviews have only been so-so, I have to give Memphis Beat a shot because it stars one of my favorite actors, Jason Lee. I’ve loved him ever since the former skateboarder first started popping up in director Kevin Smith’s movies, and his NBC comedy My Name Is Earl was one of my favorite comedies of the ‘00s.

Memphis Beat centers on Dwight Hendricks (Jason Lee), a quirky Memphis police detective with an intimate connection to the city, a passion for blues music and a close relationship with his mother. He is "the keeper of Memphis," a Southern gentleman who is protective of his fellow citizens, reverential of the city's history and deeply rooted in its blues music scene. Despite his impeccable instincts as a detective, Dwight's loose, relaxed style of police work rubs his demanding new boss, Lt. Tanya Rice (Alfre Woodard), the wrong way. But Dwight may eventually win her over to a Memphis state of mind, especially when he takes the stage at his favorite hangout to perform a legendary Elvis song or two.

Memphis Beat airs Tuesday nights at 10/9c on TNT, and stars Jason Lee, Alfre Woodard, DJ Qualls, Celia Weston, Sam Hennings, Leonard Earl Howze and Abraham Benrubi.

The NBA Starts Tonight!

The 2008-2009 NBA season kicks off tonight on TNT and The Blot is pumped. The ‘08-‘09 season should be a great one for the NBA with a ton of interesting storylines set to play out and a bunch of familiar faces in new locations and new uniforms.

The Stars of the NBA - Kobe Bryant, LeBron James & Chris Paul
I’m just counting down the minutes until tip off of the Los Angeles Lakers’ first game against the Portland Trailblazers at 10:30/9:30 central. It should be a great game and I’m excited to see the Lakers with a healthy Andrew Bynum and the Blazers’ amazing young talent with a healthy Greg Oden.
