Robot 13 Trade Paperback Kickstarter feat Robot 13 & King! Resin Figures by Motorbot

“Robot 13: Colossus!” Trade Paperback Graphic Novel Cover & Robot 13 T-Shirt

Blacklist Studios just launched an exciting new Kickstarter project to help fund the production of their first Robot 13 trade paperback! You probably remember The Blot reviewed Robot 13 a few months ago and absolutely loved it. And now here’s your chance to get in on the action for as little as just $13. “Robot 13: Colossus!” is a 100 page trade paperback graphic novel, which includes the complete first story arc of Robot 13, a heroic robot on a journey to discover who he is and where he came from.

But that’s not all! To entice you to help fund its Kickstarter project, Blacklist Studios has put together some incredible incentives. Not only are there options for buttons, glow-in-the-dark t-shirts, and original comic art, but Blacklist Studios has also teamed up with Motorbot and Deadbear Studios to produce official Robot 13 and KING! resin mini figures. How cool is that?

Designed and produced by Motorbot, each Blacklist Studio figure will stand 2" tall making them a great addition to your M.U.S.C.L.E. collection! As part of different Kickstarter pledge incentives, there will be two Kickstarter exclusive colorways created, a Pewter Edition and an extremely limited Black Edition. The Blot really loves both these characters, and I can’t wait to see these turn out. In the mean time, check out these awesome teasers image from Motorbot.

Rumor has it Motorbot is also working on a limited edition Robot 13 bust as well…more details to come! And be on the lookout for the release of the first issue of Robot 13 Book 2 sometime soon.

Comic Book Review: Robot 13 from Blacklist Studios

Robot 13 Issue #1 Cover C Artwork Cover Artwork by Daniel Bradford

The Blot’s actually had this review ready to go for a while now, but I’ve been holding it back for a very special reason (more on that tomorrow). I was recently given the great opportunity to read and review the first three issues of Robot 13: Colossus! from Blacklist Studios and what a treat! As the book’s catchphrase says, it’s a robot’s odyssey to find himself. It tells the story of a heroic robot who awoke from the ocean floor and looks for answers to who he really is.

Robot 13 Issue #2 & Issue #3 Cover Artwork by Daniel Bradford

Written by Thomas Hall with art by Daniel Bradford, Robot 13 is an exciting tale set in 1939 featuring a robot, a giant sea creature, a Cyclops and many more hideous monsters, each one more destructive than the last. I know I said this in my King review, but Hall and Bradford’s comic books really remind me of Mike Mignola’s early work, which is about as high of praise as I can give. They both do excellent jobs telling a story without the use of unnecessary text, and I’m blown away by Bradford’s ability to express Robot 13’s emotions considering he doesn’t have a face! With just a slight tilt of his levitating skull or an increase in shadowing you can really get inside the mind of this stoic hero.

Robot 13: Colossus! is currently on issue number 3, so it’s definitely not too late to catch up on R13’s many adventures to find out who he is and where he came from. Head over to MyComicShop.com today to pick up all three issues! Or, you could check back with TheBlotSays.com tomorrow for a very special giveaway (hint, hint).

Comic Book Review: King! from Blacklist Studios

Blacklist Studios - King! Issue #1 Cover Artwork by Daniel Bradford

The Blot’s favorite thing about the new era of social media we’re currently living in is the ability to meet and talk with creators I would never have had access to before. One such creator is Thomas Hall of Blacklist Studios. His indie comic books King! and Robot 13 are really fun reads that take me back to the early days of Hellboy. Not only does the King fight zombies, vampires and other creatures of the night, but Daniel Bradford’s artwork is very reminiscent of Mike Mignola. Just look at all these beautiful dark black lines and muted colors. Take my word for it, fans of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. will really enjoy this book!

Blacklist Studios - King! Issue #2 Cover Artwork by Daniel Bradford

While the art drew me in, it was the characterization of the King that kept me turning the pages. Hall and Bradford’s take on a certain rock n roll legend is definitely unique to say the least. The King is 1 part DC’s Lobo, 2 parts Bruce Campbell with just a splash of Mickey Rourke from The Wrestler. I can’t help hearing Bruce Campbell’s voice every time the King says “baby” or something King-like, especially when he’s staring at the mug of a big ugly zombie.

Between the King’s “Rock” and “Roll” brass knuckles to his former career as a lucha libre wrestler, this music legend has done it all. But before he goes into that good night there’s one last mission the King has to complete…it’s taking care of business time, baby! To find out more about the King’s battle against the undead pick up King! issue numbers 1 and 2 in stores now or at MyComicShop.com!

Official Description: Get set for a "hunka' hunka' burnin' fun" as King! does what he does best: kill monsters! The former pro wrestler-turned-bounty hunter bears more than a striking resemblance to a certain "King of Rock 'n Roll." All he wants is a whole day of nuthin'. All he gets is a talkin' heart in the mail... and the tale the heart tells is nothing short of epic! Can King simultaneously save the local Blubber Tubber Burger joint from an undead infestation and satisfy his hunger for a peanut butter banana burrito with bacon?
