2010 BCS Championship Game - #1 Alabama Crimson Tide vs #2 Texas Longhorns

2010 BCS National Championship Game logoTonight is the matchup The Blot has been waiting for his entire life. Not only are my two favorite teams playing each other for the first time since I’ve been alive, but they’re playing for all the marbles, i.e. the BCS National Championship, at the granddaddy of them all, the Rose Bowl. It’s hard to put into words what this match-up means if you’re not a sports fan.

2010 BCS National Championship Game - #1 Alabama Crimson Tide vs #2 Texas Longhorns
Growing up in Alabama you were forced at birth to choose a side, Alabama or Auburn. I, of course, picked Alabama, but since my parents are both from Texas and attended the University of Texas, I too had to be a Longhorn fan. And that’s where my split allegiances began. Since then I’ve actually attended both schools and like to think of myself as being a part of a pretty small group of people with degrees from both Universities (I went to Texas for undergrad and Alabama for law school).

So where does that leave me? Some might assume it’s a no lose situation since either way one of my two schools is winning the national championship, but not so fast my friend! I’m a Longhorn fan first and a Bama fan second. I’ve had Longhorn season tickets for the past four years and there is nothing I want more than for Colt McCoy and the Horns to destroy the Crimson Tide. Sounds harsh huh? Well that’s just how you have to be when your family and friends are split down the middle and trying to pull you in different directions. Plus, if Texas wins tonight, I win my college football pick ‘em league!

2010 BCS National Championship Game - Alabama Crimson Tide Head Coach Nick Saban and Texas Longhorns Head Coach Mack Brown
It’s been a tense month in The Blot’s family, as I mentioned above both my parents went to Texas, but my Stepmom is an Alabama alum. Even my Stepdad is trying to get into the action as a newly converted Alabama fan. I’ve been hearing for years from my high school friends how dominant the SEC is compared to the Big 12, and I’m sick of it. Tonight’s the night Texas proves to the world it is one of, if not the, elite program in college football.

While I had the opportunity to attend tonight’s game, at the last minute I decided to cancel my trip. I’m none too happy about it, but sadly I’ve come to the realization that sometimes you just have to make the hard, unpopular choice in life. And boy was this an unpopular decision, I think I’ve been told by every friend I’ve discussed it with that I made the wrong choice. Oh well, what can I say. I consider myself very lucky to have been able to attend Texas' two previous trips to the Rose Bowl and both were unbelievably memorable games. Regardless, I’ll be sitting on my couch all night, peeled to the screen in the biggest bowl game of the decade (I can say that with confidence since only a handful of bowl games have been played this decade).

2010 BCS National Championship Game - Alabama Crimson Tide Heisman Trophy Winning RB Mark Ingram vs Texas Longhorns QB Colt McCoy
Stats you may need to know before tonight’s BCS Championship game: The University of Texas is 2-0 in games played at the Rose Bowl; Texas is 3-0 in BCS bowl games; The University of Alabama is 0-3 in BCS bowl games; and Bama is 0-7-1 all time in games against the Longhorns.

The BCS Championship game between the #1 ranked University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the #2 ranked University of Texas Longhorns airs tonight, Thursday, January 07, 2010 on ABC at 8/7c.

The University of Texas Longhorns Win The 2009 Fiesta Bowl

The University of Texas Head Coach Mack Brown Celebrating the Longhorns Victory Over Ohio State in the 2009 Fiesta BowlMan, was that a crazy football game in Glendale, AZ last night or what? The Blot’s emotions were all over the place as I watched the University of Texas Longhorns take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in the 2009 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The first half was horrible, with both teams looking pathetic on offense but after halftime the fun began. With QB Colt McCoy leading the Longhorns on a couple of great offensive drives, for a few minutes there I actually thought the game might be over. But then the Buckeyes came back and actually took the lead with just over 2 minutes left in the game.

The Texas Longhorns vs. The Ohio State Buckeyes in the 2009 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
As the Buckeyes drove down the field in their last successful offensive drive you could actually see the blood drain out of the faces of the Longhorns fans’ faces I was watching the game with. Our defense had become ineffective and you could see the momentum shifting in the Buckeyes favor. When the Ohio State running back broke free for the Buckeyes’ final touchdown I was actually excited. I had thought at that point Ohio State would just run the clock down and kick a field goal to win the game, but instead they had scored too quickly and given Texas the ball back with plenty of time for McCoy and Co. to orchestrate a last minute game winning drive. The rest, they say, is history!

The University of Texas Quarterback Colt McCoy Scores a Rushing Touchdown Against Ohio State in the 2009 Fiesta Bowl
Texas is now 3-0 in BCS games, giving the school the second most wins in BCS games without a loss. The only team with more BCS victories without a loss is the LSU Tigers who are 4-0 in BCS games. Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns now have a 5 game winning streak in bowl games (2 Rose Bowls – 1 for the BCS National Championship, 1 Fiesta Bowl, 1 Holiday Bowl and 1 Alamo Bowl), which now gives the University of Texas the second longest active bowl game winning streak in the nation behind the University of Utah who have won a bowl game for six consecutive years.

The University of Texas Junior Quarterback Colt McCoy Is Named Offense Player of the 2008 Fiesta Bowl GameMack has continued to show this season that he can in fact win big games without Vince Young and the future for this young Texas Longhorns football team looks extremely bright. Junior QB Colt McCoy had a sick Fiesta Bowl, throwing for a BCS record 41 completions, 414 yards, 2 passing TDs and 1 rushing TD. Thankfully, Colt will be returning for his senior season next year, in which he will almost certainly be the front runner for the 2009 Heisman Trophy Award while the Longhorns should be ranked in the top 3 of everyone’s pre-season polls.

The University of Texas WR Quan Cosby Celebrating After Scoring a TD in the 09 Fiesta Bowl Against the Ohio State Buckeyes
The University of Texas Senior Wide Receiver Quan Cosby Scoring The Game Winning TD at the 2009 Fiesta BowlBut what has The Blot the happiest about last night’s game was the performance of senior wide receiver Quan Cosby who had 14 receptions for 171 yards and 2 TDs. Cosby has been an intricate part of the Longhorns’ offense for four straight years and has provided the offense with some much needed upper-classman leadership these past two season. While The Blot will be sad to see him go, it was great to send him and all of the other Longhorn seniors off with another great win. Now I just need the 2009-2010 college football season to start already.

The Texas Longhorns Destroy Missouri and Claim #1 Spot In The BCS Poll

The Blot attended his first and sadly only Texas home game last Saturday to see the number 1 ranked Texas Longhorns take on the number 11 ranked Missouri Tigers. I have to say it was the loudest I have ever seen DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in the past 10 years. I can’t even explain how fun it was, especially the first half where the Horns could do no wrong. The additions to the stadium are really nice and I have to think enclosing the north side has a little to do with the new found loudness of the stadium. It also didn’t hurt that this was the first home game the horns have played as the number 1 ranked team in the country since 1977.

Foreshadowing? Texas Longhorns QB Colt McCoy gives a Missouri defender the Heisman pose
Texas Longhorns RB Chris Ogbonnaya Running Through Missouri DefendersAfter taking a sick 35-3 lead into half time, the second half was not quite as exciting. But, it was a solid quality win at home and our secondary looked outstanding. I am finally starting to believe the hype and can’t even begin to describe how great quarterback Colt McCoy looked. If that guy doesn’t win the Heisman the voters need to have their heads examined. He may not have the same outlandish touchdown numbers as other QBs, but his completion percentage and the way he leads the team are unmatched by any other player in the country.

Derek Jeter and the University of Texas Cheerleaders at the Texas Longhorns vs. Missouri Tigers Football GameOn a side note it is very rewarding to have Texas ranked #1 in the first BCS poll of the year. It’s the first time the team has ever controlled their own destiny and with a number one ranking in the USA Today Coaches poll, Harris poll and all six computer polls, Texas is in good shape if they can continue to win. It is arguable that even with a loss the team could still somehow remain in the top 2 and their second shot at a national championship in the past four years.

The 2008 BCS Rankings - Week 1
Derek Jeter and Roger Clemens on the Sideline of the Texas Longhorns vs. Missouri Tigers Football GameThe one stat that everyone keeps pointing to that just seems ridiculous to me is how many teams that are ranked #1 in the first BCS poll make it to the championship game and from that small number how many actually win the game. This is such an ESPN made up statistic. Yes the number is staggeringly low, but there is one big reason why. Up until two years ago the BCS poll came out the first week of the season. After conferences realized how unfair this was to teams who started out ranked low but ended up with amazing seasons, the BCS wisely made changed to now wait to come out with their first poll of the year until after week 7 of the season.

Texas Longhorns Running Back Chris Ogbonnaya Scores a Hard Faught Rushing Touchdown on the Missouri Tigers
That’s why in the past two or three years the first team ranked 1 has been more likely to make it to the championship game while in the first 10 years that wasn’t the case. Can you imagine how many teams would have been ranked #1 in the BCS poll just this year alone if they had started the poll after week one? Needless to say there are way too many games still left to play to worry about booking a flight to Miami for the 2009 BCS Championship Game, but a fan can dream right?

#5 Texas Beats #1 Oklahoma At The Red River Shootout in Dallas, TX

Texas Longhorn QB Colt McCoy Celebrating the Team's Victory Against the Oklahoma Sooners on October 11, 2008Man what a great day Saturday was for The Blot. I wanted to blog about the Red River Rivalry on Friday but was afraid I’d jinx the game. Instead the Longhorns came out and gave the kind of gutsy, gritty performance you don’t typically see out of a Mack Brown led team. This was hands down the biggest win of Brown’s career without Vince Young and it could not have come at a better time. What’s more shocking is that this is the first time the Texas Longhorns have been ranked #1 in the AP poll during the season in 24 years. (link)

The 2008 Red River Rivalry - Texas Longhorns vs. Oklahoma Sooners
The Longhorns and the Sooners fought tooth and nail, but between Offensive Coordinator Greg Davis finally putting together a winning game plan and Colt McCoy’s amazing performance, the Longhorns left Dallas and the Cotton Bowl victorious. The next day Texas was anointed number one in the nation by both the AP and Coaches poll as well as all of the computer polls that are factored in to the BCS standings.

The Top 5 of the Oct 12, 2008 AP College Football Poll
Texas Longhorns WR Jordan Shipley Sprints Past the Oklahoma Sooners during a Kickoff for a TDWhile the official first BCS doesn’t come out until next week, Texas is in good shape to be ranked #1 in that poll as well, as long as the team is able to stay focused and beat 11th ranked Missouri in Austin on Saturday, October 18th. The Blot had been praying Missouri would beat Oklahoma State last Saturday night so that the Horns might play two #1 teams in a row. But Mizzou ultimately lost that game at home. Nevertheless, next week’s game is still a must win for Texas and The Blot will be there in attendance to help cheer the Longhorns to victory Saturday night in Austin.

The Blot Catches Up On Blogging After A Busy Weekend

Battlestar Galactica - Season Three DVDSorry I’ve been missing all day, but The Blot’s Monday has been really busy following a crazy weekend. The first thing I can report is that I am officially caught up on Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica just in time to start watching Season 4 this Friday. The only think left for me to do is watch the made for TV movie Battlestar Galactica: Razor which debuted last November on the Sci-Fi Network. The movie is set in the past and explores what took place on the Battlestar Pegasus btween the initial Cylon attack in the 2003 Battlestar Galactica mini-series and when the Pegasus rejoined Galactica and the colonial fleet in Season 2. Evidently some events from this movie help to set up the storylines to come in Season 4, so I’d like to watch it before Friday’s season premiere.

Battlestar Galactica: RazorI was waiting to watch Razor until I caught up on Season 3, since it came out after Season 3 ended and I was worried it might spoil something in the season for me. Now that Texas was knocked out of the NCAA Basketball Tournament by the Memphis Tigers in the Elite Eight, I should have plenty of time to catch up on Razor and watch Season 4, Episode 1 this week/weekend.

Texas Guards A.J. Abrams and D.J. AugustinWhat a disappointing game I attended on Sunday. Texas was thoroughly outmatched and outplayed by Memphis. I figured we at least had a chance to beat Memphis considering Texas beat Kansas at home late in the year (and Kansas is arguably as big and talented as Memphis), and Texas beat Tennessee by 18 on a neutral court early in the year (Tennessee is the only team to have beaten Memphis this year and the game was at Memphis). As it turns out, all of my rationalizing was moot once the game started as Memphis dominated Texas from tip-off and completely took the primarily pro-Texas crowd out of the game.

Texas Sophmore Guard D.J. Augustin guards Memphis Freshman Guard Derrick Rose
While I was pretty dejected during the game, in retrospect I am very pleased with our season and in the fact that Head Coach Rick Barnes and the team made it to the Elite Eight. The season went better than anyone could have imagined after losing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year and then losing the NCAA Player of the Year, Kevin Durant, to the NBA. The team really came together this year and ended up being even better than last year by being ranked in the Top 10 most of the year, breaking the school's record for wins in a season, and beating 3 top 5 teams, including two Final Four teams, in UCLA, Kansas and Tennessee.

The University of Texas Men's Basketball Head Coach Rick Barnes
With that being said, Texas couldn’t have asked for a better route to a return trip to the Final Four with their Tournament games being scheduled in Little Rock, Arkansas, Houston, Texas and then in San Antonio if they had reached the Final Four for the second time in the Rick Barnes era. I guess there’s always next year. Hopefully our All American point guard D.J. Augustin will see the benefit of staying in college for another year so the team will have an even better chance to return to the NCAA Tournament next year.

One Shining Moment

The Blot will be gone for the rest of the day. I’m going to pick up my dad at the airport and then heading down to Reliant Stadium in search of my one shining moment (a.k.a. two big victories by the University of Texas men’s basketball team). Yes, I’ll be at the NCAA Men’s Basketball South Regional tonight cheering on my Texas Longhorns against the Stanford Cardinal and then hopefully returning on Sunday to watch them battle the winner of the game between the Memphis Tigers and the Michigan State Spartans.

University of Texas Sophmore Guard and First Team All-American D.J. Augustin
Everyone keeps saying what an advantage it is for Texas to be playing their Sweet 16 game (and possibly an Elite 8 game) basically at home in Houston, TX. I say it’s only an advantage if they win. Hopefully 30,000 fans in burnt orange will prove to be as much of an advantage as a lot of the critics think it will be. What I do know is that while it’s nice Texas has “reached the NCAA Sweet 16 five times in the last seven years” (the only other schools to have accomplished this feat over the past 7 years are Duke and Kansas), I think it’s high time for the Longhorns to break through again and make it to the school’s second Final Four under Head Coach Rick Barnes. (link)

University of Texas Junior Guard A.J. Abrams Strugles To Help Up Teammate Sophmore Center Dexter Pittman
Honestly though, I’m being cautiously optimistic about the game against Stanford. While I think Texas has the talent to make it to the NCAA Final Four, I’d be lying if I didn’t say the Lopez brothers’ size and skills don’t scare the hell out of me. Hopefully starters A.J. Abrams, first team All-American D.J. Augustin, Damion James, Justin Mason, Connor Atchley and the rest of the team are ready for a war.

March Madness

The NCAA Basketball Tournament beings….now! And honestly, I couldn’t wait much longer. These next four days have to be my favorite sports weekend of the year. The buzzer beaters, the upsets, the bracket wagers, this weekend’s got it all. Of course I’ll be rooting on my Texas Longhorns to make it to Houston for the South Regional Finals and eventually San Antonio for the Final Four, but even if they don’t make it to the third weekend of the tournament I’m sure there will be some compelling story lines to get us through the month. I’m interested in seeing which team Cinderella’s slipper attaches itself to this year.

Barack Obama Invades The 40 Acres

Texas' New Number One Fan - Senator Barack ObamaWhile the Democratic presidential debate in Austin may be over (currently being replayed on CNN as I write this) and Senators Obama and Clinton are back out on the campaign trail, there is still one important issue to discuss…Senator Obama’s visit with the University of Texas’ football team earlier today. I was actually kind of shocked to find out that Mr. Obama took time out of his busy campaign schedule to take a tour of the school’s athletic facility and spend some quality time with Mack Brown and his players…but it did make for a pretty cool photo op.

Texas Longhorns Colt McCoy and Quan Cosby Tour The School's Facilities with Senator Barack Obama and Head Coach Mack Brown
The Austin American Statesman reports that while Texas Head Coach Mack “Brown has said that he doesn’t even vote (in anything other than the coaches poll), lest he be seen as straying too close to the political fire…his wife has donated to Obama’s campaign, giving $500 last March.” (link) Mack knows, as any good head football coach should, that picking a side, Democrat or Republican, can lead to a dicey situation while out recruiting, but it can’t hurt to have one of the most popular people in American flashing the Hook‘em Horns sign while campaigning to be the next President of the United States.

Oklahoma Embarrasses Itself In The BCS Again

Not one to shy away from rubbing it in, The Blot would just like to draw the Nation's attention to the University of Oklahoma Sooners football team's record in its last 4 appearances in BCS Games. It's 0-4. If you need more clarification on Oklahoma's 0-4 record over the past 5 years please see ESPN's graphic below.

Graphic Courtesy of ESPN.com
Of course as a Texas Longhorns fan I have to admit that to have an 0-4 record over the past 5 years means OU has made it to a few more BCS games than Texas has in recent years. That's really unfortunate, but at least when Texas makes it to the big games they come to play (Texas is 2-0 in BCS games in that same 5 year span).

Texas Longhorns' RB Jamaal Charles Turns Pro

Jamaal CharlesWell it's been rumored about for weeks but today the University of Texas released a statement that junior running back Jamaal Charles will be leaving school early and entering the NFL draft. Charles had a tremendous year and I for one will be sad to see him go. Jamaal ended the season with 1,619 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns and currently ranks fourth in career rushing yards at the University of Texas behind only Heisman Trophy winners Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams and Doak Walker award winner Cedric Benson. (link) Who knows what records and accolades would have come Charles’ way if only he had decided to return to Austin for his senior season.

Jamaal CharlesYou really can’t blame Charles for leaving, the Longhorns have continually underutilized him and never once did the Horns’ coaching staff attempt to focus our offensive game plan around his unique rushing skills. And yet game after game this year there was Jamaal, willing to give his all and pull the Longhorns out of the fire in the fourth quarter of games. Just look at the Nebraska game where he had an astounding 216 yards and three TDs in the fourth quarter alone. (link) It is only appropriate that Charles leave school after another great performance against Arizona State in the 2007 Holiday Bowl. With 161 yards and two touchdowns in his final college game, cementing a seventh straight 10 win season for Texas, #25 can leave his college football career behind with his head held high and the knowledge that the fumbles that plagued his career a distant memory in the minds and hearts of Texas fans everywhere.

Vince YoungWhat’s really amazing about Charles leaving early for the NFL is that in the 10 years since Mack Brown took over as head coach of the Texas Longhorns, Charles and quarterback Vince Young are the only two players to ever leave the program early for the NFL. (link) That is really an incredible statistic for college athletics in this day and age, especially for a major football program like Texas. I don’t know what Mack says to these young men but Texas fans have definitely be spoiled to not have to worry about losing their star players early for the NFL and the riches it offers. We in the Longhorn Nation can only hope this does not start a trend of student-athletes leaving early for the draft. As always, only time will tell.

The Blot Invades Westwood

Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood SeriesA few years ago The Blot was bored and made a list of all of the different sporting events and specific games I’d like to attend one day. Surprisingly, over a much shorter period of time than I expected, I’ve already been able to check off a good portion of the list. Whether it was just a matter of being at the right place at the right time or through the generosity of others, I’ve witnessed some pretty cool sporting events. Last Sunday night I was able to check off another item on my list.

Pauley PavilionYou see not all items are necessarily big events. Growing up I was a huge UCLA Bruins basketball fan and always wanted to see the home of the Wizard of Westwood from the inside. Last December when it was announced that there was going to be a Big 12/Pac-10 matchup and the marquee game was going to be Texas at UCLA I knew I had my excuse to head west to Pauley Pavilion. So after a year of planning, Al and I flew to LA last weekend to visit some friends and family and then go support our #7 ranked Texas Longhorns take on the #1 ranked and undefeated UCLA Bruins.

UCLA vs. TexasThis was the first true road game I’ve ever attended and the crowd at Pauley Pavilion was intense. The stadium was packed and there was actually a pretty good number of Texas fans scattered throughout the arena. Ironically we actually ended up sitting next to two Texas fans who now live in California. I don’t think I’ve ever attended a basketball game that was that loud. It’s such a different experience going to a college basketball game at a school with such a rich and historic basketball program. After every single basket scored by the Bruins their fans erupted.

Wooden Court It was the loudest basketball game I’ve ever been to. You’d have thought UCLA was killing us the way their fans cheered every play and supported their team, instead of what was really going on…Texas going on a 17-0 run in the first half for a huge 16 point lead. I was super impressed with the Bruin faithful and their support of their team. It never wavered. But then again I was sure we were going to blow it in the second half. That’s just how basketball works, right?

Tip Off

UCLA vs. Texas Final Score Sure enough the second half started and UCLA came on strong. I don’t know how it translated on television, but the stadium was incredibly loud the entire second half. Once the momentum shifted towards UCLA the crowd was going nuts and then the Horns squandered their entire first half lead. The lead changed back and forth for a while and both teams kept hitting big shots. Within the last five minutes the lead was never more than 4 points for either team and I finally started to believe an upset was possible. The fact that Texas was able to take the lead with 8 seconds left and then hold on for the victory was unreal. Texas fans throughout the stadium were going nuts and Pauley Pavilion was silent. You’d have thought with Coach John Wooden at courtside, all of the NBA scouts in the audience (reportedly 29 of 30 teams were represented at the game), and Hollywood elite like Denzel Washington and John Lithgow in the crowd cheering on the Bruins, UCLA would have come out on fire. What I didn’t realize was how great Texas’ zone defense really is. The Longhorns swarmed all over the court and all UCLA could do was pass along the perimeter and take bad shots. Texas was even able to hold UCLA’s star freshman Kevin Love to just 11 points and 5 rebounds.

DJ AugustinI can’t even describe how impressed I am with how great our sophomores played. Point guard D.J. Agustin controlled the flow of the game and Damion James looks like a completely different player from last year. His intensity and rebounding is still there but now the guy can shoot lights out. Combined with the improved play of junior Connor Atchley, the Horns haven’t skipped a beat after losing Playing of the Year Kevin Durant to the NBA.

Before the game I was just hoping the game would be close and that the Horns wouldn’t get blown out. It’s my own fault for not seeing enough of our early games to realize how good this Texas team really is. After beating then ranked #7 Tennessee on a neutral court and now this 63-61 victory over UCLA, Texas is a legitimate national power and a deservedly ranked Top 5 team.

UCLA vs. TexasI also can’t speak highly enough of the UCLA fans. After attending the 2006 Rose Bowl where Texas played USC, I was a little concerned with how UCLA fans would act. Obviously they are two very different schools but both fan bases are in Los Angeles. The USC fans that game were atrocious and were pretty rude to all of the Texas fans throughout the game. UCLA fans, on the other hand, were the complete opposite of how USC fans acted. Now it could be the difference between football and basketball, but everyone was very friendly and nice before and after the game.

UCLA 1995 National Championship BannerAs I was walking around before tipoff admiring the 11 basketball NCAA national championship banners hanging from the rafters I was stopped by an older fan who wanted to share some stories from back in the day and pointed out to me where Coach Wooden would be sitting during the game in case I wanted to try and get a picture of him. After we won, fans were congratulating us and couldn’t believe we came all the way from Texas to watch the game. It was nice to see fans being good sports after such a devastating loss. The whole game some fans behind me kept screaming to the Texas players and Texas fans that “this is what it means to play in Pauley!” I guess what he was saying was true… it was a cool experience and an even better win. So on the way out I thanked the fan for showing me the true meaning of what it meant to play in Pauley Pavilion.

The Fall of the House that Vince Built

Vince Young, Mack Brown and Mickey MouseIt’s amazing that less than two seasons ago, The University of Texas Longhorns were on top of the world. They had just won their first National Championship in decades by winning a game many consider to be one of the greatest college football games ever. The University of Texas then went on to set the all time record for merchandise sold in a year, $8.2 million in licensing royalties, following the school’s BCS championship (Link). The Texas football program was no longer just the toast of Austin or of the State of Texas, it was, albeit for a very brief period, America’s Team. And yet here we are, less than two years removed from that fateful season and my how everything’s changed.

Since last June, 6 Texas Longhorns football players have been arrested on numerous charges all more shocking than the last. Any time I hear the terms “D.U.I.” or “felony counts of obstruction and tampering,” I get sick to my stomach. Here are Student Athletes being given the great opportunity to represent my alma mater and be given a free education, yet chose to throw it all away for a good time. Then came the Austin American Statesman’s article about the UT Athletic Department’s spending, you can read it here. Did you know the University of Texas spends over $100 million a year on its athletics department? And yet even though Texas spends more than almost any other school, “UT has made a deliberate decision to limit the intercollegiate sports it supports” (Link).

Texas Head Coach Mack BrownThe fact is college athletics, and the University of Texas Athletics Department more specifically, is blatantly becoming less about education and more about Big Business. This isn’t new information or even a new idea. But, when the amount of college student athletes on the 40 Acres is decreasing while spending is at an all time high, we just need to come right out and admit it and stop pretending it’s something else. And you know what? At the end of the day I’m ok with that. I’ll admit I’m a diehard Longhorns fan and I want what’s best for my School and its Student Athletes. But what I’m not ok with is the way the school is running its biggest business and definitely biggest cash cow. No other corporation would allow what is going on with its employees and its product like what's happening at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The way the Texas Longhorns football team is playing and acting on and off the field, right under its Head Coach’s nose, is abysmal and unacceptable.

This team has become an embarrassment not only to The University of Texas, but to its current Students, Alumni and the State they are so often referred to by. It’s not just their many arrests but also their play on the field. Anyone who says winning isn’t important is kidding themselves. Do you have any idea how much Longhorn ticket holders have to “donate” just for the opportunity to buy season tickets? These aren’t donations, they’re what is known in the NFL as Permanent Seat Licenses (PSLs). Don’t get me wrong, I know this same thing is taking place at colleges with big athletic programs all across the country but that’s not the point. When people are spending that kind of money just for the right to then purchase tickets, try telling them that winning isn’t important. It’s the school that’s turned their football team into a business, not the fans.

Coach BrownThis brings us to the big issue at hand, when a company is not meeting expectations, constantly underperforming and always in the news getting bad press, who should take the blame? The only answer I can come up with is Head Coach Mack Brown. And typically when a corporation sinks this low, the board of directors doesn’t just sit idly by and watch, they spring into action and call for changes to be made. I believe it’s time for the School President, Athletic Director and countless boosters to finally come together and demand changes from Coach Brown.

Mack is a great recruiter, he’s a great politician and is everyone’s best friend, but what he’s not is a great football coach. The problem is that while most successful leaders, in any industry, realize their strengths and weaknesses and then surround themselves with people who can help with their deficiencies, Mack refuses to do that. Instead of finding the best assistant coaches who are able to be strict, know how to prepare before the game and come up with new and revolutionary game plans, Mack sticks with his faithful minions who haven’t had a new idea in years. On top of it all, he’s unwilling to make the tough calls like forcing his Offensive Coordinator Greg Davis to resign. If I have to watch one more pass to a WR standing at the line of scrimmage about to get lit up by the defender two yards away from him or another handoff from the shotgun position to a standing still Jamal Charles only to have any holes in the offensive line closed before he can even make it to the line of scrimmage, I’m going to tear what little hair I have left out. How does last year’s Defensive Secondary comprised of three future NFL first round picks get torched by every quarterback it faces!? Because the coaches have no idea what to do with the talent they have and don’t properly prepare their players. Texas puts way too many players into the NFL not to be dominate every year, but then again how many players can you think of that have left the school as a better player than when they arrived?

Mack BrownMack seems to have has lost control of this team and has once again proven he can’t win the big game without Vince Young. It’s a knock against his coaching legacy that still follows him even after winning that elusive national championship. Many of the Longhorn faithful thought that the old Mack had been cleansed from our program once the great and might VY arrived. The truth is Texas won all those games in spite of Mack and Greg Davis, not because of them. Vince won those games because of his ability and in game decisions, not because of coaching decisions or game plans. It’s time to bring in someone who will display some authority, either as an assistant, associate or position coach. Make these players accountable for their actions before they commit their next crime, not after it. It’s time to let go of the dead weight, finally let Greg Davis retire with some dignity and fire these so called co-Defensive Coordinators. Bring in some coaches with some swagger, intensity and a thirst for victory to lead these young men into battle. Let’s prove to the country why “We’re Texas.”
