Battlestar Galactica Reboot Pop! Vinyl Figures Series 1 by Funko

Since Funko launched its Pop! vinyl figure line way back in 2010, The Blot’s wished for two television series to get the Pop! treatment: LOST and the 2003 reboot of Battlestar Galactica! Rumor has it a LOST series is in the works and now Funko is releasing a killer new line of modern era BSG Pop! figures! The reimagined Battlestar Galactica series is one of the all time great sci-fi television shows that unfortunately has been downgraded in the eyes of pop culture aficionados because of its finale (see any similarities to LOST!?!).

The Battlestar Galactica Reboot Pop! Television Series 1 includes Katee Sackhoff’s Lt. Starbuck, Tricia Helfer’s Six and a Cylon Centurion. Each BSG Pop! vinyl figure stands 3.75”, features one point of articulation and come packaged in a full color displayable window box. While these figures aren’t expected to hit store shelves until February 2016, you can pre-order them now from Entertainment Earth for $9.99 each here.

Houston FanFair Debuts with The Flash’s Jesse L. Martin's 1st US Convention Appearance

The Blot just got this exciting press release that I just had to pass along! Comicpalooza, the largest pop-culture con in Texas, is putting on a fan appreciation event on September 19-20 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Houston FanFair is a more intimate event than Comicpalooza, and is designed as a great entry-level event to bring friends who have never experienced a con before.

Guests scheduled to appear at Houston FanFair include Jesse L. Martin in his very first US convention appearance (Detective Joe West from The Flash), Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), Grey DeLisle (Grammy and Emmy Award-winning popular voice actress) and Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/ Angel).

In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of SyFy's Battlestar Galactica, coming to Houston FanFair are series regulars Aaron Douglas (Chief Gaylen Tyrol), Kandyse Mcclure (Anastasia Dulles), Tahmoh Penikitt (Lt. Battlestar Galactica Pop! Vinyl Figures Series 1 by Funko

One of the most undervalued sci-fi shows of all time is the original Battlestar Galactica series from the 1970s. Thankfully, the show hasn’t been forgotten by Funko who will be releasing a new line of Battlestar Galactica Pop! Television vinyl figures based on the cult classic! This May we can join Commander Adama and his ragtag fleet, which includes Starfighter pilots Captain Apollo and Lieutenant Starbuck, as they battle the evil Cylon Centurions and search for the long lost thirteenth tribe of humanity.

Each Battlestar Galactica Pop! vinyl figure stands 3.75”, features one point of articulation and come packaged in a full color displayable window box. While these BSG Pop! Con Report: The Houston Con 2014

I have to say, The Blot had a blast at The Houston Con 2014! I was only there for one day, but it was so great attending a small quant show with fans who were so excited to see the celebrities and artists in attendance. With comic conventions blowing up across the country, many of these comic-cons have lost their personality. They’ve turned into soulless moneymakers really devoid of any joy. You just see the masses walking through lines and getting their 30 seconds of face time with celebrities. This was definitely not the case at The Houston Con 2014.

To be honest, the artists I was excited to see were not able to make it to the convention, and the television shows represented at The Houston Con were not my cup of tea. But it was really cool to see fans of all ages go crazy for the stars of MTV’s Teen Wolf, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. The Teen Wolf and MMPR fans especially were out in force! I was really just floating from table to table watching the celebrities interact with fans and everyone involved seem to be having such a great time.

What I was most impressed with at The Houston Con was the amazing cosplay at the show. I had no idea there was so many talented cosplayers here in Houston. For such a small convention the costumes were incredible. I wish I had been able to take more pictures, but as you can see here there were some fantastic pop culture inspired designs. I really can’t wait to see this show grow and see it build upon the success of this year’s show. I would really love to see more comic book content incorporated into Houston’s newest comic convention.

The Blot heads to The Houston Con 2014 this August!

Are you feeling down stuck at home while thousands of people are stuck in long lines and huge crowds at San Diego Comic-Con 2014 this weekend!?! Well have no fear, there’s an equally awesome comic-con nearby, possibly even in your city! Amazing conventions are popping up everywhere and you might just not know about them. If you live in Texas you should definitely make plans to come in to Houston for the all-new The Houston Con! This exciting new convention (which merged with the former Space City Con), will be taking place at the Hilton Houston North August 8-10 and has a really great line-up of celebrities, comic book artists and so much more!

If you’re a fan of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Houston’s very own Jason David Frank (the original Green/White Power Ranger) will be at the convention!!! Along with Jason, the show will be hosting fellow MMPR alumni Erin Cahill, Alison Macinnis, Hector David Jr., Brad Hawkins and Jason Faunt! But that’s not all, The Houston Con will also be hosting Battle Star Galactica’s Richard Hatch and Kate Vernon, and Game of Thrones’ Jame Cosmo! There’s also a big contingent coming from MTV’s Teen Wolf that includes Dylan Sprayberry, Eaddy Mays, Melissa Ponzio and Mason Dye.

Personally, The Blot’s the most excited about The Houston Con’s awesome line-up of coming book artists! They’re bringing legendary Image creator Whilce Portacio, who is celebrating 30 years in the comic book industry, along Ale Garza (Wonder Woman, Teen Titans), Ken Lashley and Andrew Dalhouse. This is definitely one comic-con not to miss!

SDCC 13 Exclusive Battlestar Galactica Gold Cylon Commander Bobble Head

Threadless Pop Culture Robots “Used Appliances” T-Shirt

While this awesome pop culture tee has been out for a while, The Blot wanted to highlight it while Threadless’ 10th Anniversary $10 Sale was still going on. “Used Appliances” reimagines some of pop cultures most popular robots as mundane household appliances. It’s got everything from Optimus Prime as a dryer, a Voltron lion as a vacuum and R2-D2 as a coffee machine. My favorite is the Mega Man hair dryer, but who doesn’t love the most obvious one, a Cylon as a toaster.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan Television Movie Premieres on Syfy This Sunday, Jan 10th

Please excuse the following rant, but did anyone else NOT know that the made for television movie Battlestar Galactica: The Plan was set to premiere this Sunday, January 9th, on Syfy!?! I know this “movie” was released on DVD months ago, but The Blot, like most BSG fans, chose to wait to watch it until the 2 hour special debuted on TV. Now that the series is over, The Blot isn’t really following Battlestar Galactica news or watching Syfy, but shouldn’t more fans have known The Plan was going to air THIS Sunday!? Seems like poor marketing by Syfy, doesn’t it?


Not only is it bad marketing, but it also seems like horrible scheduling to The Blot. The channel formerly known as Sci-Fi could have aired this BSG special anytime in the last three weeks without any competition while most shows were on hiatus, but they chose to air it the same night as the season premieres of Chuck and Big Love (not to mention new episodes from Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters). I know most of you are thinking so what, the show’s already ended and has a totally different audience than most of the aforementioned shows. But in reality this movie should be acting as a springboard to Syfy’s new show, Caprica.


Now I have to figure what show I’m actually going to watch live on Sunday, Chuck, Big Love or The Plan. Thankfully, the Chicago Tribune’s Maureen Ryan has made my decision a little easier by describing The Plan as feeling “like a two-hour ‘previously on Battlestar Galactica.’” (link) Ryan is as big of a BSG fan as they come, and if she’s underwhelmed by The Plan then I’ve got a feeling I will be too. It’s really too bad, because I had high hopes for a BSG project written by Jane Espenson and directed by Edward James Olmos (who also plays Admiral William Adama in the movie).

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan’s world television premiere is scheduled for Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 9/8c on Syfy.

Battlestar Galactica - The End Is Here

This is it, the day I’ve been dreading for almost two years now…the day the two hour Battlestar Galactica Series Finale airs on the Sci Fi Network. I don’t know what to expect from tonight’s BSG episode, but I have a hunch it’s not going to end well for the show’s central characters. If there is one thing I’ve learned from watching Battlestar Galactica these past 6 years it’s that no one is safe.


Who will survive tonight’s final episode? Will Adama be able to save Hera? I really have no frakking idea, but I hope “Daybreak, Part 2” lives up to the expectations of the BSG faithful. While series finales often garner huge ratings for shows, they also typically end up being let downs to long time fans hoping for real resolution. I’ve read that not everyone’s stories are tied up in neat little bows, but I pray we at least get some closure to the story of the human race’s fight for survival. In the end, I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that humanity and its rebel Cylons allies survive their final battle with Cavil and his army of evil Cylons. I guess all will be revealed in just a few hours…and nothing will ever be the same again.

The two hour Battlestar Galactica Series Finale “Daybreak, Part 2” airs tonight, Friday, March 20, 2009, at 9/8c on the Sci Fi Channel.

This is an exciting post for The Blot because it highlights two of my favorite things, the television show Battlestar Galactica and the gaming-related webcomic Ctrl+Alt+Del. I had originally intended to highlight some of my favorite webcomics over the past year, but for some reason I’ve done a really poor job of it. While this post isn’t actually about the Ctrl+Alt+Del webcomic, you might want to go check it out here nevertheless! What this post really is about is CAD’s Starbucks’s Roasted Cylon Mug, which is frakking awesome!

Joss Whedon's Dollhouse Premieres Tonight On FOX

After months of anticipation, Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse will finally premiere tonight on FOX at 9/8c. Whedon has become one of the unofficial kings of pop culture and amassed a serious cult following after creating some truly great stories on television, the internet and in comic books (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dr. Horrible, Astonishing X-Men). Don’t get me wrong, the guy is a genius and I love his work, but for some reason his shows aren’t always as successful as they should be.


Take Dollhouse for instance. Besides being given the timeslot of death (Friday nights at 8!?!), there were rumors of rewrites, reshoots and recasting from the very start. Plus, no matter how FOX and the show’s producers want to spin it, a network never airs a show on Friday nights if it sees a potential hit. Friday nights is where shows go to die. On the positive side, FOX has invested a ton of time and money into this new series and I don’t think anyone wants to see Dollhouse fail.


Even after all those negatives I am still excited to watch tonight’s series premiere! Besides being written by the great Joss Whedon, it also stars some of The Blot’s favorite actors: Eliza Dushku (Buffy, Tru Calling) and Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica). The show’s plot sounds a little convoluted, so make sure you read Dollhouse’s official show overview here or at the very least read this short excerpt about the show's storyline:

Dushku’s character Echo is an "Active," a member of a highly illegal and underground group of individuals who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Burn Notice Returns to the USA Network Tonight!

I know this is a little last minute, but there has been so much good stuff going on this week! Burn Notice Season 2, Part II premieres tonight, January 22nd on the USA Network and The Blot is pumped. Burn Notice has something special that a lot of the new network television shows lack, fun. The action/spy thriller never takes itself too seriously and no matter what’s happening on screen, the actors seem to be enjoying themselves almost as much as their fans enjoy watching Burn Notice's storylines play out. Plus, Burn Notice stars the timeless Bruce Campbell, so what’s not to love?


I’ve heard that over the course of Burn Notice Season 2.5 we can expect some exciting new developments in Michael’s (Jeffrey Donovan) quest to discover the reason he was burned as he gets ever so close to finding out the true identity of the mastermind behind it all. We can also expect several more guest appearances by Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer as Michael’s new handler Carla. Burn Notice’s overarching storyline seems to be really picking up steam, and I know you won’t want to miss even a single minute of this great hour-long espionage dramedy.

Burn Notice airs every Thursday at 10/9c on the USA Network.

Battlestar Galactica - The Final Episodes

Well we’re finally here, just one day away from the beginning of the end. The final 10 episodes of Battlestar Galactica begin airing on Friday, January 16, 2009 and The Blot doesn’t know how to react. Should I be happy or sad that the fourth and final season of BSG will be coming to its scheduled end in just a few short weeks?


On the one hand I’m excited. Not only because after a ridiculously long hiatus we get to finally watch all new episodes of one of the best TV shows ever, but also because we’ll hopefully be getting a ton of answers to questions that have been building for four long seasons. Questions like “who is the fifth and final Cylon?” and “what exactly happened to the planet Earth?” But on the other hand I’m bummed because after a measly 10 more episodes it’ll all be over…no more Starbuck, no more Cylons, no more political intrigue wrapped in religious allegories and no more Edward James Olmos giving one of the best, underappreciated performances in television history.


I have no idea what’s in store for the last remaining survivors of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol but I’m sure it’ll be exciting and not everyone will make it through to the end alive. Any guesses on which main characters bite the dust first? And guessing one of the numbered Cylon skin-jobs doesn't count since they can just be reborn if a resurrection ship is nearby.

If it’s any consolation, this won’t be the last we of our favorite Battlestar Galactica characters on television as a prequel made for television movie is already in the works. Battlestar Galactica: The Plan will be directed by Edward James Olmos and air in 2009 following the conclusion of the series. The two hour movie will take place before the events of the miniseries and focuses “on familiar characters including Cylon Number One, known as Cavil, Resistance Leader Sam T. Anders and Chief Galen Tyrol.” (link) BSG: The Plan reveals that even though “the Cylons had a plan, it didn't account for one thing: survivors. During the chaotic aftermath of the destruction, two powerful Cylon agents struggle with plots and priorities on the human ships that got away, and among the resistance fighters who were left behind.” (link)

Battlestar Galactica Season 4, Part II (also known as BSG Season 4.5) will air Fridays on the Sci-Fi Channel at 10/9c.

Battlestar Galactica: The Face of the Enemy - All New Webisodes

If you’re like The Blot then you can’t wait for the premiere of Battlestar Galactica Season 4 Part II on January 16th. Thankfully your wait is over because last Friday, December 12th, the Sci-Fi Channel launched an all new 10 part webisode series, Battlestar Galactica: The Face of the Enemy. The first two webisodes have already been posted and another two will be added each week leading up to the start of BSG’s final episodes. Each webisode will be 3-4 minutes long and “will complement the stories played out in on air episodes and give viewers more insight into characters and events from the fourth season” (link)


According to a Sci-Fi press release, Battlestar Galactica: The Face of the Enemy “follows the gripping action and suspense inside a stranded Raptor carrying a group of passengers including Lieutenant Felix Gaeta (Alessandro Juliani) and a Number 8 Cylon (Grace Park). When passengers suddenly start dying one by one in alarming ways, fear, panic and chaos erupt within the confines of the small ship, as they come to realize there is a killer among them. Michael Hogan (Colonel Tigh) and Brad Dryborough (Lieutenant Hoshi) also star."

Battlestar Galactica Season 4 Part II Promo - The Epic Journey

All new episodes of Battlestar Galactica’s fourth and final season begin airing on the Sci-Fi Channel on January 16, 2009 at 10/9c. Until the show’s final batch of episodes air, we can only debate who will be revealed as the final Cylon and where this crazy journey will ultimately take the last remaining humans of the 12 Colonies. This week the Sci-Fi Channel released an all new BSG promo, The Epic Journey, to give fans a sneak peek of the conclusion of this amazing show and its fraking awesome.

Battlestar Galactica News and Caprica Trailer

Thankfully, we won’t have to wait as long for the completion of Battlestar Galactica Season 4 as I had first thought. The Sci Fi Channel announced this week that the second part BSG’s final season would begin airing in January 2009. (link) While The Blot dreaded having to wait until 2009 to watch the Battlestar's final 10 episodes, at least they are debuting Season 4, Part II in January and not making us wait until the summer of 2009.

The second interesting bit of Battlestar news is that BSG’s own Jamie Bamber (Apollo) has been chosen to star in the newest Law & Order spinoff, Law & Order: UK, as one of the show’s two central police officers. This is the first Law & Order series to be created specifically for another country, but have no fear, the show will have the “same premise as the original American Law & Order, same everything, just with a U.K. production company and U.K. actors.” (link)

Considering all three of the original Law & Orders were just renewed for another season, it seems like nothing can slow down the Law & Order franchise, even lower ratings. No word yet if Law & Order: UK will be replayed in the United States. My guess is that it will air in the U.S. one day, either on BBC America or on one of the networks of NBC Universal, possibly the USA Network.


And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for…the Sci Fi Channel has posted on their website the very first Caprica trailer for their upcoming Battlestar Galactica prequel television movie/series. Caprica takes place “a generation before Battlestar” and features the legendary Adama family struggling with the creation of the first Cylons. (link) You can catch this exclusive trailer here.

Battlestar Galactica vs. Lost

Tonight is the mid-season finale of Battlestar Galactica on the Sci-Fi Channel and I think it's complete bs. At the end of BSG Season 3 there was a decision to renew the show for one final season in order to wrap up the ongoing saga between the human race and the Cylons. 20 episodes were ordered and yet here we are, 10 episodes in and Sci-Fi has not only decided to split the season into two mini-seasons, but is also planning on waiting up to a year before airing the second block of episodes.

This is eerily similar to what FX has been doing to The Shield, which has all but killed all of the momentum that series had built up over its past two seasons. The mid-season break seems like an even worse idea when you take into consideration how BSG’s ratings have been steadily improving over the course of the show’s fourth season. (link) I am pretty annoyed by Sci-Fi’s scheduling decision because if they felt like Battlestar Galactica was so important ad revenue wise then why didn’t they just go ahead and order a fifth season. As it is now, the show has been dragging this seasons story wise and now that things have finally picked up we’re given a mid-season finale and are being forced to wait months, if not a year, to see the series conclude. Now you’re probably asking yourself why did I title today’s post Battlestar Galactica vs. Lost?

The answer is simple really. Both shows are unique in that an ending to both were pre-determined before the start of the shows' final seasons. While Battlestar’s ending point was determined at the end of the show’s second to last season, Lost’s was decided upon three years before its final season. The impact of those decisions seem to have drastically different effects on the two shows. In the case of BSG, most fans seem to think it has hurt the show and slowed down storylines as the creators slowly guide the cast and crew to the show’s Season 4 series finale. On the other hand, many believe Lost’s decision to end after Season 6 has really helped the show and actually sped up the story telling process. In fact, Lost Season 4 has been one of the show’s best while giving viewers more answers than ever before.

So, why the difference and does this bode poorly for Lost’s final season? My guess is that one final season of 20 episodes for BSG was probably more episodes than its creators needed to properly conclude the series, but not enough to start completely new storylines and introduce new characters. While I undertsand that you don’t want to introduce new characters and storylines during a show's final season, it seems to have confined where the storylines can go(except in the case of killing off characters, which BSG seems content to be doing every single week. I worry that there will be no one left by the time we reach the season finale).

I am concerned that Lost will get stuck in a similar rut as it moves into its final season. On the plus side, Lost only has 16 (now 17) episodes during its final season versus Battlestar Galactica’s 20. I also think Lost has more minor storylines and mysteries to address as it prepares for its final two seasons than Galactica ever had. This should help to fuel more episodes and give fans more action as the show progresses. Regardless, I do fear that what has happened to Battlestar Galactica this season could easily happen to Lost in its final season. Hopefully the creators of Lost will see the things that have hurt BSG this year and try to shy away from that type of stagnation.

NBC 2008 San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives - The Office, Heroes, Battlestar Galactica

If you thought San Diego Comic-Con was just comic books and toys you’d only be half right. It’s also a time for networks and studios to unveil their “next big thing” and/or celebrate with the fans the few things they’ve produced in the past year that have become a part of our pop culture. NBC has decided to start the hype early by opening their very own NBC San Diego Comic-Con store, which will be selling limited quantities of their 2008 San Deigo Comic-Con exclusives starting on June 18th.


While an online site selling Comic-Con exclusives before the 2008 SDCC has even taken place doesn’t exactly make the most sense, it is nice that NBC is giving fans who can’t make it to San Diego an opportunity to purchase some limited edition memorabilia. According to the NBC Store they have four items debuting at the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con, all with varying degrees of limited edition runs. First up is a special edition limited run “Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.” Dwight bobblehead & t-shirt for all of the fans of The Office out there. Then there is a Battlestar Galactica Frakkin’ Cylon Toaster, which actually brands your toast with a picture of a Cylon. The advertisement says this toaster will only have one production run, so I’m assuming this item isn’t all that limited.

Lastly, NBC has created two different Heroes items to unveil at this year’s SDCC. The first is the Current/Future Hiro Bobblehead, the first ever two-headed bobblehead which was specifically designed for launch at the 2008 SDCC (i.e. not limited at all). The second Heroes item is a Sylar Special Edition Action Figure, which comes with an exclusive painting designed exclusively for NBC at the 2008 Comic-Con. There were limited quantities of this Sylar Special Edition Figure created, and I would expect this item to sell out quickly between die hard Heroes fans scrambling to get their hands on all things related to the show and action figure collectors who love SDCC exclusives.

Tricia Helfer Set to Guest Star on USA’s Burn Notice

The Blot is extremely excited about this one! TVGuide.com is reporting that Tricia Helfer, Battlestar Galacticas’s cylon Number Six, has signed on to guest star on USA Network’s spy/action show Burn Notice for a multi-episode arc this summer. (link) According to the report, “Helfer, who recently inked a talent holding deal with FOX (which produces Burn Notice), will juggle her Burn duties with the final season of BSG.” (link)


Burn Notice, which starts its second season on Thursday, July 10th, has quickly become one of The Blot’s favorite television shows. I originally started watching only because Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead, Army of Darkness) was co-starring in it, but the unique story telling of the show, as well as a stellar cast that includes Jeffrey Donovan as Michael Weston, Gabrielle Anwar as Fiona and Sharon Gless (Cagney & Lacey) as Michael’s mom, kept me coming back.

Burn Notice is one of those rare shows that week in and week out gets better and better. It’s a shame the show is on USA, which limits the initial viewing audience. For a quick recap, a burn notice is what a spy gets instead of being fired. The show stars Michael Westen as “an international spy who suddenly finds himself blacklisted” and has no clue why. (link) Westen, “dumped in his hometown of Miami without money or resources, struggles to put his life back together and find out why he’s been burned.” (link) The show does a great job of mixing in “mysteries of the week” with its continuing story line of why Michael Westen get burned so that if you happen to miss an episode you can quickly get caught up to speed. I highly recommend watching Burn Notice, and if you want to catch up on Season 1 before the start of Season 2, the Burn Notice Season 1 DVD Box Set comes out June 17th, 2008.
