A New Madvillain Vinyl Figure by MF Doom x Madlib Invazion!

Madvillain Vinyl Figure by MF Doom x Madlib Invazion

As I’ve mentioned on The Blot Says a few times over the years, my very first Kidrobot vinyl figure was their Madvillain release back in 2007. It was also one of the very first vinyl figures I ever blogged about almost 10 years ago. To this day KR’s Madvillain figure is still one of my all time favorite pieces in my collection. So I was really excited to learn that the same creative team behind that figure, including illustrator/animator/director of “All Caps” James Reitano, were teaming up with  hip-hop legend MF Doom and Madlib Invazion on an all new Madvillain figure!!!

Madvillain Vinyl Figure by MF Doom x Madlib Invazion

This awesome 2016 version of the Madvillain vinyl figure stands 8” tall and is a whopping 8” deep. The Madvillain’s gold case accessory is removable, and the case itself opens for storage of, well, whatever you can fit in there. It comes packaged in a custom box designed by Reitano that can be disassembled as a diorama for the figure. But that’s not all! Each figure also includes an exclusive Avalanche 7” vinyl record single by Madlib and MF Doom.

Madvillain Vinyl Figure by MF Doom x Madlib Invazion

Collectors can purchase this brand new Madvillain vinyl figure now at the Rappcats online store for $85 (it will ship in February 2017). The figure was designed and sculpted by Charlie Becker, and manufactured by Blitzway (the South Korean toy manufacturer who manufactured the J Dilla figures) on behalf of Madlib Invazion.

Whiskers the Undead Vinyl Figure by Aesop Rock & Kidrobot

Whiskers the Undead Vinyl Figure by Aesop Rock & Kidrobot

Kidrobot announced exclusively on Vinylpulse the upcoming release of the Whiskers the Undead vinyl figure by Aesop Rock. Whiskers originally debuted back in 2012 in a series of four promo videos for Aesop Rock’s Skelethon album. This undead cat has been reimagined as an anatomically realistic 10.5” vinyl figure designed by artist Galen McKamy and Aesop Rock. According to VP, “the undead cat is poised to snare a crow perched tantalizingly on his skeletal head, a scene which unfolds on the gorgeous gold-foil stamped box featuring three original illustrations by Coro. The figure makes strong use of injected PVC to realize Whisker’s intricate skeleton including a hyper-detailed head with sculpted nasal passages and a torso with individual ribs which give way to organs (heart, intestines) and finally the cat’s fur hind quarter – all of which appear to be rotocast.”

Whiskers the Undead goes on sale this Thursday, December 11th, at Kidrobot.com, Kidrobot SF, Kidrobot Las Vegas, select retailers worldwide and Aesop’s official store, Fifth Element, for $250 each.

J Dilla Vinyl Figure by Pay Jay

J Dilla Vinyl Figure by Pay Jay

How freaking awesome is this officially licensed J Dilla vinyl figure!?! The Blot can’t even put into words how excited I was to learn this awesome tribute figure was finally available for pre-order. James Dewitt Yancey (aka J Dilla) was such an amazing talent, and I love that his impact on both hip hop and pop culture is still so evident. This J Dilla vinyl figure was conceived and rendered by Detroit artist Sintex, designed and sculpted by Seoul-based toy artist P2PL and was manufactured by Blitzway on behalf of Pay Jay Productions (which was founded by J Dilla) under the oversight of the Estate of James Yancey. Stussy even got in on the release by officially licensing its logo for the figure. This is a true collaboration, just like so many of J Dilla’s tracks!

The J DIlla vinyl figure stands 7.5″ tall, features 2 points of articulation (arms), and includes a hat, sampler and chain accessory. Snoop Dogg 7” Vinyl Figure by Kidrobot

Snoop Dogg 7” Vinyl Figure by Kidrobot

Sigh, when The Blot was 14 years old I would have loved Kidrobot’s new 7” Snoop Doggy Dogg vinyl figure. Back in 1993 The Doggfather was one of the music industry’s hottest artists and he dominated pop culture. I consumed every album, mixtape and cameo Snoop released. But nowadays Snoop Lion is but a mere caricature of his former self, and this vinyl figure is disappointing in so many ways.

Where is the artistry and design in this toy? KR could have done so much with this release, but instead we get a ‘bot reimagined as Snoop. The head sculpt is pretty nice though! But what is up with those terrible looking arms and hands!?! I expect so much more from Kidrobot. What’s even more depressing is a second wave of Snoop Dogg x Kidrobot vinyl figures will evidently be released later this month. Another missed opportunity from the former leaders of hip-hop and designer art toys.

The Snoop Dogg 7” vinyl figure is available now at Entertainment Earth for $49.99 here.

“Dilla Day 2014” J Dilla T-Shirt by Lightsleepers & kaNO

Donuts Are Forever 2 - “Dilla Day 2014” J Dilla T-Shirt by Lightsleepers & kaNO

Hawaii’s own Lightsleepers held their 2nd annual Dilla Day this morning and from the pics I’ve seen it was a huge success! Donuts Are Forever 2 pays tribute to the amazingly talented rapper and producer J-Dilla (aka James Yancy), who was tragically taken from us too soon in 2006 due to TTP. This year’s limited edition t-shirt was designed by kaNO and looks super fresh! Each tee purchased will include a limited edition record tote bag (for the first 12 customers), stickers, pins, and a few other surprises. Even better still, a portion of all proceeds from the sale of this shirt will go to the J-Dill Foundation. Pretty dope, right!?!

The “Dilla Day 2014” t-shirt by kaNO is currently available for purchase at the Lightsleepers online store in sizes S-3XL for $40.
