Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li Trailer and Movie Posters

Can someone, anyone, explain to me how Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li got made!?! Has no one seen the monstrosity that was 1994’s Street Fighter: The Movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme? The Blot is as big a fan of Street Fighter II as anyone, and I practically played it and Mortal Kombat nonstop back in the 90’s. But the truth is the franchise is just not as mainstream as it once was and I can’t believe someone sunk their hard earned money into making another live action Street Fighter film (although I do have to admit I loved 1995’s Mortal Kombat and 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation).

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li Final Theatrical One Sheet Movie Poster
I am sure it is no small coincidence that The Legend of Chun-Li is being released in conjunction with the release of Capcom’s latest Street Fighter video game, Street Fighter IV. Although, I can’t imagine the millions spent filming this newest live action Street Fighter movie will translate into higher video game sales.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li Official Trailer

I guess there is a chance the movie is actually worth seeing, but I’d imagine most people who end up seeing it in theaters are either huge fans of the Street Fighter franchise or huge fans of Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk. I for one am much more excited about finally playing Street Fighter IV on Playstation 3 than I am watching the Black Eyed Peas’ Taboo as the masked “Spanish Ninja” Vega.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li Teaser Movie Poster
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li stars Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li, Chris Klein as Nash, Neal McDonough as Bison, Robin Shou as Gen, Moon Bloodgood as Maya, Josie Ho as Cantana, Taboo as Vega and Michael Clark Duncan as Balrog.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li hits theaters today, Friday, February 27, 2009.

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe - The Villains Part 2

Midway has finally released the character renderings of the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe video game’s two biggest and baddest villains, Shao Kahn and Darkseid. MK’s Shao Kahn and DC’s Darkseid round out the video game’s 22 character roster and they definitely left the best for last. Shao Kahn looks exactly as I picture him, but I am interested in seeing how both he and Darkseid look compared to the other playable characters in the game. Specifically, are these two villains the same size or are they larger in stature than the other DC Comics and Mortal Kombat characters.

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe - Shao Kahn
As for Darkseid, I’m a little torn as to my feelings concerning his Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe rendering. On the one hand I really like this “modern” take on the classic Kirby character and think his new uniform fits in really well with the Mortal Kombat universe. On the other hand, I was really hoping he’d be wearing and fighting in his traditional grayish blue skirt. Plus, he’s really not as thick and blocky as Darkseid traditionally looks. It seems like of all the DC Comics characters, Midway changed up Darkseid’s appearance the most and I’m more than a little surprised they did that. With that being said, the end result looks pretty sweet so I don’t have that much room to complain.

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe - Darkseid
Look for the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe video game to hit store shelves in the U.S. and the rest of North America on November 16, 2008.

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe - The Villains Part 1

With all of the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe news hitting the web this month I almost forgot to post the latest character designs for two of the four new villains unveiled last week, Baraka and Lex Luthor. I have never been a huge fan of Luthor’s green and purple armored suit, but I guess it’s a needed addition if the character is expected to perform hand to hand combat against the super powered heroes and villains of the Mortal Kombat and DC Comics universes.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Lex Luthor
On the other hand, I think Baraka looks awesome. He is as scary looking as ever and I absolutely love that toothy grin of his. I can’t wait to use those arm blades of his to cut up the opposition.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Baraka
Unfortunately, there has still been no sighting of character renderings of either Shao Khan or Darkseid for next month’s video game release. The Blot for one is dying to know if Darkseid will be battling the minions of Outworld in his trademark bluish-grey skirt. More details to come as they become available.

One exciting bit of information I forgot to pass along last week is that Midway has finally announced an official release date for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Fan's can expect to see the game on store shelves and available for purchase throughout North America on November 16th, 2008. So only a few more weeks until the carnage really starts!

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe: Kollector’s Edition Artwork by Alex Ross

More information on MK vs. DCU keeps coming out every day. If you haven’t been to the video game’s official website WorldsCollide.com lately you should go check it out. The website has recently been re-launched with an all new layout and much better graphics.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Video Game Logo
The other exciting news coming from Midway is that the company will also be releasing a special North American Kollector’s Edition version of the game. Best of all, the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Kollector’s Edition will feature a cover painted by legendary comic book artist Alex Ross. Ross is one of The Blot’s favorite comic book artists and his paintings are legendary for their realistic look and feel.

Along with the fighting game, the Kollector’s Edition of MK vs. DCU will include a removable print by Ross and a 16-page comic book published by DC Comics and drawn by Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias. The comic will chronicle the shocking, universe-shattering events that lead up to the in-game story mode of MK vs. DCU.

Fans will be able to finally play this exciting game next month, November 2008, when MK vs. DCU is finally goes on sale.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Video Game Box Art and Final Roster

There have been a couple of exciting announcements the past few weeks concerning Midway’s Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe fighting game. First up is the unveiling of the video game’s official box art, which you can see below:

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Video Game Box Art
The second exciting news is that the full roster of playable characters was finally released. (link) We now know officially that MK vs. DCU has 22 playable characters, 11 from the Mortal Kombat universe and 11 from the DC Comics universe. The final four characters announced should make some fans really happy, especially those of you who love playing as villains since the newest characters are some of the baddest men in their respective universes.

The final two Mortal Kombat playable characters are Shao Khan and Baraka, while the final two DC Comics characters are Lex Luthor and Darkseid. I will post some pictures of the MK vs. DCU version of these characters when they become available, in the mean time check out this screen shot of Baraka battling the Flash:

MK vs. DCU - Bring On The Villains

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Video Game Box ArtDid The Blot call this one or what? Ok so Raiden isn’t exactly a villain, but he is now included in the upcoming Midway game Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. I could have sworn I read somewhere there was only going to be 16 playable characters, 8 from each universe, but boy am I glad that I was wrong.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Raiden
As for the villains I alluded to in the title of this post, there were two additional villains added to the list of MK vs. DCU’s playable characters. Along with Raiden, you will also be able to play as Mortal Kombat’s knife wielding villain Kano. The other villain added to the game is one I never expected to see in the game, the DC Comics villain Deathstroke.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Kano
Over the past few years Deathstroke has grown into one of the premier villains of the DC Universe and is now always included in the upper echelon of DC’s villain brain trust. Even with that being said, Deathstroke the Terminator has never been a mainstream DC character. I do think the Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans cartoon has vastly improved Deathstroke’s marketability, but he still is not on the same level as other popular villains like The Joker, Lex Luthor, The Riddler or even Wonder Woman's foe the Cheetah.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Deathstroke
I cannot explain how excited I am that DC decided to include good old Slade Wilson in MK vs. DCU. Deathstroke was made for this type of fighting game and I am pretty excited to one day play as Deathstroke against the likes of Batman, Green Lantern, Scorpion and Shang Tsung.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Character Updates and Screenshots

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - BatmanWhile we still don’t know the final playable Mortal Kombat character, the complete DC Universe roster has finally been revealed for the upcoming Midway game Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. The last, but certainly not least, playable DC hero was of course, Wonder Woman. This completes a pretty solid roster of DC super heroes and villains, and includes all of the typical heavy hitters like Superman, Batman, The Flash, The Joker and Catwoman, as well as two surprises, Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Shazam (a.k.a. DC’s Captain Marvel). I’m glad to see Shazam be included because he and the other Fawcett heroes are so often considered the ugly step-child of the DC Universe.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Wonder Woman and Kitana
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Green Lantern and Jax
While we still don’t know the 8th Mortal Kombat fighter to be included in MK vs. DCU, I was pleasantly surprised to find Kitana and Jax included in the roster. I think Midway did an excellent job of picking the MK roster, and I’m holding out hope that The Blot’s favorite Mortal Kombat character, Raiden, will be included in the fighting series’ latest installment. So far the Mortal Kombat playable roster includes Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Sonya Blade, ShangTsung, Kitana and Jax.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Scorpion and Catwoman
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Screenshots - Green Lantern vs. Liu Kang
I’ve included the newest renderings of the characters in the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe video game and some newly released action screenshots taken directly from the game. I can’t tell you how excited I am for MK vs. DCU. The screenshots look really cool and I love the way Midway has incorporated the abilities of Green Lantern’s power ring into the Kombat style of fighting. I think GL Hal Jordan is going to prove to be a very formidable opponent in the realm of Mortal Kombat. Who knows, this game might actually push me over the edge into finally buying a Playstation 3.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Update & SDCC Gameplay Demo

Midway, the creator of the upcoming video game Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe for the PS3 and Xbox 360, unveiled a lengthy gameplay demo of the game at the San Diego Comic-Con MK vs. DCU panel over the weekend and released the names of four new playable characters.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Superman and Sonya Blade
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Liu KangThe gameplay demo, which you can watch below, explores the vast settings the heroes and villains wage war in and displays some of the awesome combo moves from the game. I was really excited to see that Mortal Kombat’s trademark splattered blood was still extremely prevalent in the fighting game. It was also announced at the SDCC Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe panel that Fatalities will, in fact, be in the game! According to a report from Newsarama, “the DC Heroes will deliver Brutalities (punishing, but non-lethal beat-downs) while all the MK characters and the DC Villains will be able to use Fatalities.” (link)

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Shazam (Captain Marvel)With four additional characters announced, the grand total of known playable characters is now up to fourteen, seven Mortal Kombat characters and seven DC Universe characters. The two new MK additions are Kitana and Jax, who join the previously announced Liu Kang, Scorpion, Shang Tsung, Sonya Blade and Sub-Zero. Joining the DC Comics roster comprised of Superman, Batman, Flash, Shazam and Catwoman are The Joker and Green Lantern.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Extended Video Game Trailer

A while back The Blot mentioned the upcoming crossover fighting video game Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe: Worlds Collide pitting characters from Midway’s Mortal Kombat series of games and the heroes of the DC Comics universe. So far 10 characters have been confirmed in the game and they include Liu Kang, Scorpion, Shang Tsung, Sonya Blade and Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat and Batman, Captain Marvel, Catwoman, Flash and Superman from DC Comics. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics - Worlds Collide

Marvel vs. CapcomFollowing the success of company crossover fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom and X-Men vs. Street Fighter in the 90’s, it was only a matter of time until we saw another versus style arcade game finally developed. Now comes news that Midway and DC Comics are joining forces to bring the heroes of the DC Universe and the warriors of Mortal Kombat together for the very first time in the new Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics video game.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics - Worlds Collide
As a child of the 90’s I can’t even begin to determine the amount of quarters I spent playing Mortal Kombat back in the day. There was nothing better than beating an opposite and then killing them with Mortal Kombat’s patented “Finishing Move.” And now to be able to control both Mortal Kombat and DC Comic characters in a versus style fighting game might just be the thing needed to finally motivate me to retire my PS2 and look into getting a PS3 or Xbox360.

According to News-a-rama.com, “there will be two different stories, one told from the side of MK, one from the side of DC, where each universe is invaded by the opposite universe’s characters. These stories will be told in a new version of the traditional single player campaign. The story will be used to balance the fights more evenly, and will do so using established mythology. For instance, the story will feature magic factors, to weaken Superman against a character like Sub-Zero.” (link)

Already confirmed in the game are Superman and Batman from DC and Sub-Zero and Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. Be on the lookout for future confirmed characters and an official release date at WorldsCollide.com. In the meantime check out this awesome “first look” trailer for the game, which shows Batman and Sub-Zero going at it Mortal Kombat style.

There has been some serious mixed reactions to the announcement of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics, but my favorite commentary on it comes from David Willis’ Shortpacked!. Shortpacked! is one of my favorite webcomics and is updated 3-5 times a week. Check out Willis’ Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics comic strip below and click here to find out more about Willis and his cast of Shortpacked! characters.
