Yesterday, Tristan Eaton and his print shop, Dead Press, released this beautiful new art print entitled “Kabukicho”! As Tristan explained, “A client recently commissioned me to create a Geisha inspired painting for his private collection. It was a joy to paint and because of the extremely positive reaction from my community I’ve decided to make a small edition available to the public.”
Eaton went on to say “I first visited Tokyo in 2004 to see my Uncle Rabindra, an artist who moved there in the 1980’s. He was recovering from Cancer, but took me all over Tokyo and taught me so much about what it’s like to have a career in the arts in Japan. I photographed everything! Kimonos, street signs, advertising, toys, graffiti, it was all beautiful to me and it felt like another planet. I’ve been back since many times and my new art print titled ‘Kabukicho’ features much of the patterns and imagery I photographed myself while walking the streets of Tokyo. This edition is a love letter to those streets and the precious times I spent there with my dear uncle Binda - my first role model as an artist!”
Kabukicho by Tristan Eaton was released in two sizes, 18”x27” and 24”x36”. Both sizes are fine art giclee prints on Entrada 290 GSM Archival Cotton Rag Paper. Wow, check out this epic TMNT First: Peter Laird Vinyl Figure by Justin Ishmael and Bottleneck Gallery! This figure is based on Peter Laird’s initial idea and concept from a scribble on a napkin when he originally co-created the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Kevin Eastman. What makes this piece really amazing is that it’s a companion piece to “The Fist Turtle” Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figure based on the original artwork of TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman that Mondo put out way back in 2015 (seen here)! The Blot cannot believe this set is finally being completed!!!
As the legend goes, one night at Mirage Studios in 1983, Laird was shown a drawing of a “Ninja Turtle” by Kevin Eastman as a joke, which would later be referred to as the “First Turtle”. In response, Laird illustrated his version of a masked turtle wielding weapons. The two artists had unknowingly created what would turn into the phenomena known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
As BNG explained, “We’ve worked with Laird’s initial concept to lovingly produce Laird’s Ninja Turtle as a limited edition collectible figure with illustration-accurate details. Although the Turtles’ look has evolved over time, we’re excited to honor the awesome origin of some of our favorite comic book characters ever!”
