Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series T-Shirts by Tyler Stout, Kevin Tong & Ken Taylor

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series T-Shirts by Tyler Stout, Kevin Tong & Ken Taylor

The Blot recently stumbled upon FifthSun.com, which is the official online retail for Fifth Sun, a leading supplier of graphic apparel for the retail clothing industry. While I was looking through their online store, I noticed there were a number of officially licensed Star Wars t-shirts based on artwork from Mondo’s 2010 Star Wars Screen Print Series. There were t-shirts featuring the artwork of Tyler Stout, Kevin Tong and Ken Taylor without any reference to Mondo or the artists. While I’m sure everyone had to sign ownership of the original artwork over to Star Wars back in ‘10, The Blot hates that the artists themselves aren’t given any credit for their work. Ugh… It almost makes me not want to blog about the release of these Star Wars t-shirts.

The unofficial Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series T-Shirts by Tyler Stout, Kevin Tong and Ken Taylor is currently available at the Fifth Sun online store in sizes S-2XL for $22 each (the crewnecks and raglans are a little more).

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #20 - The Original Star Wars Trilogy Set by Tyler Stout

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #20 - The Original Star Wars Trilogy Set by Tyler Stout - Star Wars

This is it, the final release of the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series! These three movie posters for the original Star Wars trilogy by Tyler Stout are so beautiful, I seriously want to cry. I could dissect each print for hours, but I’ll spare you from such a verbose blog post…if you do want to discuss these killer prints, hit me up on Twitter! I will say my favorite part is that the Return of the Jedi Variant print actually reads Revenge of the Jedi (the film's original title).  I am also really glad to see Stout included all of my favorite characters. This is definitely a must have for any Star Wars and/or screen print fan.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #19 - King’s Lead Hat by Rob Jones

The second to last print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series was released earlier this week while The Blot was out of town on my honeymoon, and after 10 wonderful days in Hawaii, I’m back! It’ll be impossible to catch up on all the cool stuff that’s come out while I’ve been gone, but I couldn’t skip over “King’s Lead Hat” by Rob Jones.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #19 - King’s Lead Hat by Rob Jones

Rob Jones’ inspiration for “King’s Lead Hat”:

“There’s a scene in Star Wars where Grand Moff Tarkin strides into his council room on the Death Star announcing the dissolution of the Imperial Senate. His officers express concern over the Emperor’s ability to maintain control of star systems without this governing body. To this Tarkin retorts, ‘Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station.’

This exchange made me consider the motivation behind the Emperor’s construction of Darth Vader. I’m not referring to just the cybernetic bits maintaining Vader’s body but also the active manipulation of his mind to bring him to the dark side. The Emperor created in Vader a weapon no different from the Death Star in its ultimate purpose, a means of generating fear amongst the vast populace he ruled. An administrative tool that became the executor of the Emperor’s cruel commands. With that in mind, I decided to depict Vader as a facility harnessing and directing his immense natural power towards malicious ends.”

“King’s Lead Hat” by Rob Jones is a hand numbered 27“x36” screen print with metallic inks. This Star Wars print has a limited edition run size of 255 pieces and will retail for $50 each. “King’s Lead Hat”can could have been purchased directly from Mondo at a random time on Tuesday, December 28th, but it sold out instantly.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #17 - Ten Banthas by Jay Ryan

Wow, the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series is seriously ending with a bang! Last week we got a low run Daniel Danger print and this week Mondo gives us an even smaller run Jay Ryan print. If this trend continues The Blot expects to see an Olly Moss or Tyler Stout Star Wars print with a run size of 50 pieces. “Ten Banthas” features, well, ten Banthas roaming the desert planet of Tatooine. And if you look closely at the print’s background you can even make out a tiny Star Destroyer flying through the sky.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #16 - Sanctuary Moon by Daniel Danger

Although the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series is nearing its end, the amazing designs just keep on coming! The latest, “Sanctuary Moon,” is by Daniel Danger and features a scene set during Return of the Jedi. This beautiful print depicts a night on the forest moon of Endor during a battle between the Ewoks and a battalion of AT-ST Walkers. Danger is one of the most popular screen print artists around, so you know this poster is going to be highly sought after.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #15 - Han Shot First by Florian Bertmer

“Han Shot First” by Florian Bertmer, the fifteenth screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series, is the second print to depict a scene from the Mos Eisley Cantian. Even though the print features Greedo, one of my favorite secondary Star Wars characters (he’s right up there with Nien Nunb and Lobot), I just don’t see this as a print I could seriously hang in my home. Regardless, the print’s amazingly detailed and I just love its title, because don’t we all still believe Han really did shoot first?

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #14 - A Linch Pin Droid by Kevin Tong

The Blot is super excited about the fourteenth screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series because it’s by one of my favorite artists, Kevin Tong! Kevin’s “linch pin” prints are always amazing, and “A Linch Pin Droid” is no exception. The fact that it features a deconstructed R2-D2 makes it all that much better!

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #14 - A Linch Pin Droid by Kevin Tong

Kevin Tong had this to say about hi print: “My print is called ‘A Linch Pin Droid’ and it’s an exploded view of R2D2, my favorite character in the Star Wars Trilogy. For this print, I made certain that I stayed true to the original Trilogy and spent months watching and pausing it. Although this print is largely technical, I was hoping that by showing R2D2′s individual tools and components all spread out, people can reflect on the moments in the Trilogy where he used those devices to save the day and the galaxy.” To find out more about the creative process behind this print click here.

“A Linch Pin Droid” by Kevin Tong is a hand numbered 24“x36” glow in the dark screen print. This Star Wars print has a limited edition run size of 400 and will retail for $50 each. Collectors can purchase “A Linch Pin Droid” directly from Mondo Tees at a random time Friday, November 26, here.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #13 - A Wretched Hive by Martin Ansin

The thirteenth screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series, “A Wretched Hive” by Martin Ansin, looks awesome. It depicts one of my favorite scenes from the original Star Wars film (I refuse to refer to it as “A New Hope”), when Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi visit the Mos Eisley Cantina. Not only does the print feature a menagerie of Star Wars aliens, but it also marks the first time Han Solo or Greedo have appeared in a Mondo Star Wars print.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #13 - A Wretched Hive Standard Copper Edition by Martin Ansin

Ansin thoughts behind “A Wretched Hive”: I've always liked that scene in Reign Of Fire where these post-apocalyptic survivors re-enact Star Wars scenes for their children; in the future, the stories that we really like have become legends. For this poster I tried to do something similar, but in the opposite direction in time. I wanted to see how the cantina scene would look if it had been illustrated for an old book, if Star Wars was a traditional epic adventure sharing space with King Arthur and Beowulf. Who knows, maybe sometime in the future it will.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #13 - A Wretched Hive Variant Metallic Silver Edition by Martin Ansin

“A Wretched Hive” by Martin Ansin is a hand numbered 24“x36” screen print, and is the first Mondo Star Wars print to have a variant edition! The standard Copper Edition, shown above, has a limited edition run size of 360 prints and retails for $50, while the variant Metallic Silver Edition has a run size of only 150 prints and retails for $85. Collectors can purchase “A Wretched Hive” directly from the Mondo Tees online store at a random time today, Thursday, November 18th.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #12 - Attack Position by Rich Kelly

The twelfth screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series was announced yesterday, and it’s an interesting print by Rich Kelly entitled “Attack Position.” This is the first Mondo print featuring everyone’s favorite Wookiee, Chewbacca. While The Blot’s excited to finally see Chewie on a screenprint, this particular image isn’t my favorite. I’m not sure if it’s Kelly’s style, the print’s color scheme or the fact it depicts a battle scene on Endor from Return of the Jedi.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #12 - Attack Position by Rich Kelly

Here are Kelly’s thoughts behind his design: “After re-watching the original trilogy and observing how Chewbacca interacted with the rest of the characters, I realized that on more than one occasion he was basically used for comic relief with Han. Even during some of the battle scenes he seems to be fumbling around a bit. As a kid, I definitely remember thinking of him as a major force to be reckoned with. Therefore, I decided I wanted to depict Chewie as one bad dude; kicking ass and taking names. Endor came to mind as an appropriate environment, with Chewbacca gliding down a fallen tree, about to attack a couple of unsuspecting storm troopers.”

“Attack Position” by Rich Kelly is a hand numbered 24“x36” screen print. This Star Wars print has a limited edition run size of 400 and will retail for $50 each. Collectors can purchase “Attack Position” directly from Mondo Tees at a random time today, Friday, November 12, here.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #11 - Luke’s Destiny by Frank Stockton

The eleventh screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series was announced yesterday, and it’s a beautiful print by Frank Stockton entitled “Luke’s Destiny.” This is the first Star Wars print by Mondo Tees to feature either Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader, and they definitely picked a killer scene to depict. Is there any scene in the Star Wars franchise as riveting and impactful than the moment in The Empire Strikes Back when Vader announces to Luke (and to the world for that matter) that he’s Luke’s father?

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #11 - Luke’s Destiny by Frank Stockton

“Luke’s Destiny” by Frank Stockton is a hand numbered 24“x36” screen print. This Star Wars print has a limited edition run size of 360 and will retail for $50 each. Collectors can purchase “Luke’s Destiny” directly from Mondo Tees at a random time today, Thursday, October 28th, here.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #10 - Palace by Tom Whalen

The tenth screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series was unveiled last night and it’s entitled “Palace” by Tom Whalen. The Blot loves “Palace” so much it might actually be the first print in the series I try to buy!

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #10 - Palace by Tom Whalen

Whalen’s artwork is always top notch, and he does a great job incorporating all of my favorite things from Jabba’s palace into one print without overcrowding the image. I especially love that Whalen included Han Solo in carbonite and a little Salacious Crumb in the corner. If only he had found room for a Gamorrean Guard somewhere!

“Palace” by Tom whalen is a hand numbered 17.5″x26″ screen print. This Star Wars print has a limited edition run size of 260, and will retail for $50 each. Collectors can purchase the “Palace” print directly from Mondo Tees at a random time today, Friday, October 22nd, here.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #9 - Bounty Hunters Wave 2 Set by Ken Taylor

The ninth screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series is being released today and it’s the Empires Strikes Back Bounty Hunters Wave 2 by Ken Taylor. Wave 2 is a 3 print set and features 4-Lom, Dengar and everyone’s favorite Star Wars bounty hunter, Boba Fett! These 8-10 color screen prints look crazy good, and The Blot is seriously jealous of all the Star Wars fans out there who end up with all 6 of these bounty hunter screen prints! You can check out Ken Taylor’s Bounty Hunters Wave 1 here.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #8 - Salacious B. Crumb by Rhys Cooper

The eighth screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series was unveiled yesterday and it’s features Salacious B. Crumb, the Kowakian monkey-lizard employed by Jabba the Hutt as a quasi-court jester. The “Salacious B. Crumb” print by Rhys Cooper spotlights one of The Blot’s favorite scenes from Return of the Jedi, where Crumb is seen tearing out C-3PO’s eye as Jabba’s empire crumbles to the ground.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #8 - Salacious B. Crumb by Rhys Cooper

According to Cooper, "I always thought Salacious Crumb is the kind of character that makes Star Wars great. Little personalities like his are what give the galaxy far far away its depth and diversity."

“Salacious B. Crumb” by Rhys Cooper is a hand numbered 24″x36″ screen print with metallic inks. This killer Star Wars print has a limited edition run size of 325, and will retail for $50 each. Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #7 - Bounty Hunters Wave 1 Set by Ken Taylor

What’s really cool about the seventh screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series is that it’s actually a three print set! Mondo Tees has teamed up with Ken Taylor to create a series within a series of prints featuring the popular bounty hunters from Empire Strikes Back.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #7 - Bounty Hunters Wave 1 “Bossk” by Ken Taylor
Wave 1 features Bossk, IG-88 and Zuckuss, so you can bet the house that the upcoming Bounty Hunter Wave 2 will include The Blot’s favorite bounty hunter, Boba Fett. These 8-10 color screen prints look fantastic, and I can only imagine what all 6 prints will look like framed and hung on someone’s walls!

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #7 - Bounty Hunters Wave 1 “IG-88” by Ken Taylor
The Bounty Hunters Wave 1 Set by Ken Taylor features three hand numbered 12″x36″ banner sized screen prints, each with a limited edition run size of 425. The upcoming “Bounty Hunter” Wave 2 set will also include three prints and will go sale sometime shortly after Wave 1.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #6 - Dawn of Tatooine by Shan Jiang

The sixth screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series was unveiled last night and it is entitled “Dawn of Tatooine.” This beautiful screenprint is by Shan Jiang, an artist The Blot is unfortunately unfamiliar with, and features a sandtrooper patrolling the home planet of Luke Skywalker on a massive dewback.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #6 - Dawn of Tatooine by Shan Jiang
Jiang explained his thoughts behind this new print: “Imagining what those people on Tatooine see in everyday life is something I wanted to create for this Star Wars poster. One of the sandtroopers is patrolling on the night shift and decides to stay up on a high rock with his dewback. Maybe he is waiting to see the sunrise or just wants to be alone for a little while. It’s a little peace before things eventually go wrong.”

“Dawn of Tatooine” by Shan Jiang is a hand numbered 24″x36″ screen print with a limited edition run size of 410. Each print retails for $50 and can be purchased directly from Mondo Tees at a random time today, Friday, September 10th, here.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #5 - Great Warrior by Todd Slater

The fifth screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series was unveiled yesterday and it is entitled “Great Warrior” by Todd Slater! Slater is one of The Blot’s favorite artists, and this screen print of Yoda is amazing in both its intricacies and composition. I love the juxtaposition of the leafy green Yoda and the dark Dagobah swamp behind him. This is definitely THE Star Wars screenprint to get of the five released so far.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #5 - Great Warrior by Todd Slater
“Great Warrior” by Todd Slater is a hand numbered 17″x24″ screen print with a limited edition run size of 385. Each print retails for $50 and can be purchased directly from Mondo Tees at a random time today, Thursday, August 26th, here.

Slater took some time to explain his Star Wars print: “From the first time that I saw Star Wars, I was captivated by the mystery of Yoda’s species and home world. For Yoda, Dagobah was a place to disappear, and I see him as being at one with the landscape. For this print I wanted to camouflage him as a part of this murky planet using leaves, sticks, ferns and other flora found in the swamps. The image is printed on black paper with a shiny black varnish layer in the background. The varnished layer reveals even more of Dagobah and is shown as a transparency through Yoda’s face. The kanji (japanese characters) on the left side gives one word representations of the six stages I identified in Luke’s Jedi training: the meeting of a great warrior, the discovery of a Jedi’s strength, entering of a domain of evil, learning that size matters not, seeing the future and finally, the confrontation of Vader. The screen print is seven colors, which is the most I’ve done to date.”

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #4 - Hoth by Dan McCarthy

The fourth screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series was unveiled yesterday and it is entitled “Hoth” by Dan McCarthy! McCarthy is a huge name in the world of screenprints and his landscapes are always breathtaking, so I would expect the combination of a McCarthy print with Star Wars to mean a super fast sellout.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #4 - Hoth by Dan McCarthy
(click on the photo above for a more detailed look)

And if you’re wondering how we know this beautiful snowy landscape really is the icy planet of Hoth, you can see a viper probe droid in the foreground, sent by the Empire to search for the Rebellion’s secret Echo Base (as seen in The Empire Strikes Back). The Blot loves Star Wars, but what’s really cool about this print is that it could be hung on your wall and most people would not necessarily know it was Star Wars related. Sometimes that’s a good thing when your significant other isn’t in to sci-fi.

“Hoth” by Dan McCarthy is a hand numbered 12″x36″ screen print with a limited edition run size of 475. Each print retails for $50 and can be purchased directly from Mondo Tees at a random time today, Friday, August 20th, here.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #3 - Father: Encounter on Dagobah by Tomer Hanuka

The third screen print in the Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series was unveiled yesterday and it is entitled “Father: Encounter on Dagobah.” "Father: Encounter on Dagobah" by Tomer Hanuka features Luke Skywalker, with Yoda on his back, walking through the Dagobah swampland and envisioning Darth Vader in the distant landscape. We’re now three prints into this amazing series, and this is definitely The Blot’s favorite Star Wars print to date!

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #3 - Father: Encounter on Dagobah by Tomer Hanuka
According to the Tomer, “the central idea going into this image was depicting planet Dagobah itself as a portrait of Luke’s subconscious in its most interesting and unformed phase. In a nightmarish sequence, Luke runs into the mist where he thinks he saw Vader. Luke finds him and a lightsaber duel ends with Vader’s decapitation. The mask cracks open on the severed head, exposing the frozen face of a dead Luke Skywalker. The suggestion here is that somewhere within Luke’s psyche there is a potential for ultimate evil. Luke’s greatest challenge isn’t the Galactic Empire and its endless, faceless troopers, but the magnetism of the dark side; the seductive idea of choosing his own potential for power over everything else.” (link)

“Father: Encounter on Dagobah” by Tomer Hanuka is a hand numbered 19″x25″ screen print with a limited edition run size of 250. Each print retails for $50 and can be purchased directly from Mondo Tees at a random time today, July 29th, here.
