Apocalypse Now German One Sheet Movie Poster Screen Print by Bob Peak x Mondo

Apocalypse Now German One Sheet Movie Poster Screen Print by Bob Peak x Mondo

Last year, Mondo released arguably one of the greatest movie posters ever – Apocalypse Now by artist Bob Peak. Luckily for cinephiles and collectors alike, that wasn’t Mr. Peak’s only work completed for Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 war epic. He also created a different movie poster for the film’s release in Germany.  So over the last year or so, Mondo has been working closely with American Zoetrope and Matthew Peak on producing a screen print of Peak’s original German one sheet artwork! As with the American one sheet art Mondo released last April, Jason Edmiston and Jon Smith handled the print separations - breaking the artwork down into 9 colors - and Shane Mahn handled the type layout.

Fun fact: Bob Peak’s signature is backwards on the artwork. Mondo asked Matthew if they should correct that for the screen printed version and he said “No”, and that his dad would want people to know his preferred orientation of the work. We were happy to oblige.

Apocalypse Now German One Sheet Movie Poster by Bob Peak is a 24”x36” hand numbered screen print. Limited to 425 pieces, it will go on sale at 11am CT today, Thursday, January 13th, at MondoShop.com via The Drop for $100.

Mondo is reproducing artist Bob Peak’s iconic movie poster for Apocalypse Now as an insane screen print!  As Mondo explained, “After receiving high-quality files from American Zoetrope, we brought in Jason Edmiston to handle color separations, alongside our own Jon Smith. Shane Mahn beautifully reproduced the billing block, and Bob’s son Matthew Peak helped as an extra set of eyes to ensure the final poster felt true to his father's original art.”

“I’ve been a fan of Bob Peak’s artwork for a long time. When I was in grade school, I’d hang out in the library and study books about movie poster art. Bob’s pieces were instantly recognizable, and stood head and shoulders above many of his contemporary’s works. His work elevated the medium to high art in my opinion. He eschewed photo-realism, by accentuating features, and exaggerating forms to enhance scenes and characters, making them appear how they felt in our minds, rather than how they appeared in reality. His abstraction and artistic flourishes added drama and excitement not often achieved in painted one sheets.

My goal when helping separate this poster for screenprinting was to retain as much of the original artist's hand and richness of colors from the original piece as possible. I took great care to approach it like a watercolor painting, building depth with layers of transparent inks, while also paying attention to the textures, airbrushed glows, and subtle linework that Bob often employed, making this one of the most iconic movie posters of all time. Jon Smith, Mondo's resident separation guru, with a superior understanding of the printing process, then gave it a final pass, improving the depth with an extra layer of transparent grey.” – Jason Edmiston
