Con Report: Comicpalooza 2013

Comicpalooza Texas' International Comic-Con Logo

While I wasn’t able to spend as much time at Comicpalooza 2013, Houston’s preeminent comic-con, as I normally would due over Memorial Day Weekend to the birth of my new twin boys, I actually was able to go for more time than I expected with three week old babies at home. It’s amazing how much Comicpalooza has grown over the past four years since The Blot started attending. You would not believe how huge this show is now! It took on special significance to The Blot with the addition of a designer toy element to the show.

The Sucklord, Nathan Hamill & Scott Tolleson will be at Comicpalooza 2013 in Houston, Texas May 24-26

This year Comicpalooza brought in The Sucklord, Scott Tolleson and Nathan Hamill to Houston and I hope it was a great convention for all three artists. Personally I thought it was amazing for the city as it introduced designer toys to a broader Texas audience. All three tables were loaded with killer toys, including an exclusive Occupy Cybertron bootleg resin figure by The Sucklord, an exclusive Deadbeet by Scott and an exclusive Curiosity by Nathan. Anything we can do to raise the profile of our little niche corner of the art world is great, and The Blot loved meeting so many fellow toy collectors from around the area. Plus I finally scored one of Sucklord's bootleg resin Dumnys!

This was a huge year for celebrity autograph seekers as well, as Comicpalooza brought in some serious heavyweights! If you’re a fan of Star Trek then you can’t ask for more than two Starfleet captains, Patrick Stewart (Picard of The Next Generation) and Avery Brooks (Sisko of Deep Space Nine), along with DS9 stars Armin Shimerman and Rene Auberjonois! They also hosted fan favorites Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, the cast of Lost Girl and more Power Rangers than you can throw a stick at. Comicpalooza also teamed up with Galacticon, the world’s largest Battlestar Galactica convention, to host almost every star of both the original and rebooted BSG series. It was seriously geek heaven!

But what really got The Blot excited about Comicpalooza 2013 were the comic book artists in attendance. Two of my all time favorite artists were brought in this year, the legendary George Perez and David Mack. I’ve been lucky enough to meet them at a few conventions over the years, but I never miss an opportunity to chat with these two amazing talents. Both are so gracious with their time and sharing insight into their creative processes. I was also really excited to meet Cheeks Galloway, an artist I’ve followed online for years but never expected to meet at a show. I was shocked to learn he’d created 10 different badge designs for the show, which were all epic!

All in all it was a fantastic Comicpalooza 2013! The show still has some growing pains to work through, but you can tell the team behind it has a strong game plan to continue the show’s success. So many of the negatives other conventions, including lack of space, have already been eliminated. If anything there’s too much space, but I think that’s probably a good problem to have as the show continues to grow. Every year the guest list gets longer with bigger and bigger names across a variety of genres. Here’s hoping this show turns into Texas’ largest and most successful comic-con (if it isn’t already!). Hope to see you all in Houston next year for Comicpalooza 2014!

Occupy Cybertron & Gay Energon Bootleg Transformers Resin Figures by Sucklord

Occupy Cybertron “One Percent” Transformers Bootleg Resin Figure by The Sucklord

Last night The Sucklord dropped two Transformers themed surprise releases in the Suckadelic online store. These Transformer bootleg figures are some of The Blot’s favorite Suckadelic characters, and I’m especially glad to Sucklord continuing the both his Occupy Cybertron and Gay Energon lines. First up is the second colorway of Sucklord’s popular Occupy Cybertron “One Percent” super villain bootleg figure. Rocking a Starscream head and a red and blue color scheme, One Percent is a hand cast, hand painted 3.75” resin figure. Packaged in a handmade 6”x8.5” blister card, One Percent has a limited edition run size of 50 pieces and retails for $85.

Gay Energon “Beta Bangee” Transformers Bootleg Resin Figure by The Sucklord

Next is the Gay Energon “Beta Bangee” Transformers bootleg resin figure. Sporting a Shockwave head and Sucklord’s trademark pink andsilver color scheme, Beta Bangee is a hand cast, hand painted 3.75” resin figure. Packaged in a handmade 6”x8.5” blister card, Beta Bangee has a limited edition run size of 50 pieces and retails for $85.

Roxy Sunblazer x The Sucklord “One Percent” Transformers Inspired Jewelry

And last but not least comes a super surprise collaboration between The Sucklord and his girlfriend Roxy Sunblazer! These two creative forces have teamed up to create a line of “One Percent” Transformers inspired jewelry, including leather ear rings and plexiglas pendants. This handmade, one-of-a-kind jewelry was inspired by Sucklord’s Occupy Cybertron movement, created by Roxy and paint splattered by Sucklord. You can purchase this awesome jewelry and the two figures seen here all at The Suckstore online while supplies last!

“Occupy Cybertron” 1 Percent 8 inch Mego-style Action Figure by Sucklord

Later today, The Sucklord will be holding his Occupy Cybertron rally at the End of Century in New York from 7-9pm. At the event, he’ll be debuting his new "Occupy Cybertron" Collection, which features resin figures, action figures and jewelry inspired by the Transformers. The figure that has The Blot the most excited for tonight’s event is the “1 Percent” 8” Mego-style bootleg action figure. This is Sucklord’s first every “Mego style” Suckadelic figure and it looks awesome.

“Occupy Cybertron” 1 Percent 8 inch Mego-style Action Figure by Sucklord - Standard Edition Blister Card & Deluxe Edition Wood Mounted

Sucklord didn't know what type of package to use with these guys, so he came up with two versions, one Deluxe Edition mounted on wood and a Standard Edition packaged on a blister card. While it says the 1 Percent 8” Mego figure has a limited edition run size of 24 pieces, Sucklord is reserving the right to decide how many of each to make depending on demand. Here's hoping some of these Mego-style Megatrons make it online to Sucklord's fans around the world!

Occupy Cybertron Bootleg Transformers Resin Figure by Sucklord

The Occupy Cybertron Collection by Sucklord

All you really need to know about this release is it’s a Transformers bootleg by Sucklord. That right there should make it an instant buy for pretty much everyone!!! It also doubles as a little piece of social commentary on the Occupy Wall street movement. But let’s not get into that one. The leader of the One Percent Army and his crew of 1% Decepticons are ready to not pay fair taxes and cause a little trouble.

On Wednesday, December 7th, the Sucklord, acting as the leader of the Decepticons, will defend his vast fortunes against a solidarity protest of Autobots, a.k.a. the 99%, who will attempt to “occupy” the End of Century retail space and gallery in New York City’s Lower East Side. The bootleg figure seen here is the first release in Sucklord’s new Occupy Cybertron Collection, but that’s not all! At the event tomorrow Sucklord will also be releasing his first ever 8” Mego style figure, a mini 3” “Protester” figure and so much more.

The Occupy Cybertron Event at the End of Century takes place Wednesday, December 7th, from 7-9pm EST. Get there early or you may miss out on this piece of Suckadelic history.
