Jonah Hex SDCC 09 Teaser Movie Poster

DC Comics - Jonah Hex Cover ArtworkDC Comics’ popular Western antihero Jonah Hex is finally getting the big screen treatment. Hex has gone through some crazy adventures over the years…he started out as an anything but typical Western bounty hunter, but was then unexpectedly thrown into a post-apocalyptic future where he became a sort of Mad Max wannabe. Even trading in his Confederate Army inspired wardrobe for a horribly cliché 80’s futuristic costume. Jonah Hex then returned to the past just in time to explore the weird and dark Wild West of the Vertigo Universe, DC Comics’ “adult oriented” imprint.

Jonah Hex San Diego Comic Con 2009 Teaser One Sheet Movie Poster
After a brief hiatus, Hex is now back in the DC Universe and starring in a popular comic book series written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti. He also made an all but too brief appearance in the DC cartoon Batman: The Brave and The Bold. Next up, Hex will be starring in his own live action motion picture starring Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex, John Malkovich as Quentin Turnbull and Megan Fox as Leila (Hex’s love interest).

Jonah Hex - Megan Fox as Leila
Photos of Fox on the set of Jonah Hex is a ridiculously tight corset set the internet a blaze last month, and has given the DC Comics inspired movie an unexpected jolt of early publicity. Here’s hoping the photo above isn’t the potential summer blockbuster’s lone highlight. The Blot’s just hoping Fox doesn’t ruin the film with her incredibly bad acting. The less she says the better!

Jonah Hex is scheduled to hit theaters next summer on June 18, 2010.

SDCC 09 - Tron Legacy Trailer and Pictures

San Diego Comic Con 2009 - Tron Legacy - Flynn's Arcade: Home of Tron Game TokenOne of the coolest things Aly and I got to experience at San Diego Comic Con a few weeks ago was the viral marketing for Disney’s upcoming film Tron Legacy (also known as Tron 2 or Tr2n). For weeks leading up to Comic-Con, fans were given hints and clues as to where they needed to go in San Diego to find a special arcade game token (seen in the picture to the right), which would gain them entrance to one of the biggest events at SDCC 2009, Flynn’s Arcade. Thankfully The Blot got hooked up with two coins on Thursday.

Honestly, even though we had the coins, neither of us had any idea what to expect once we got there. This nondescript building gave no indication as to what was inside. As it turns out, Flynn’s Arcade was amazing! It was a complete recreation of an 80’s style arcade, including all the classics like Pac-Man, Centipede, Gauntlet, Donkey King, Tron and even an air hockey machine! The games were free, but as it turns out that wasn’t what we were really there to see.

San Diego Comic Con 2009 - Flynn's Arcade: Home of Tron
After being lead through a dark hallway adorned with design drawings and sketches of a new light cycle for Tron Legacy, we stumbled upon the event’s piece de resistance, the actual redesigned light cycle for Tr2n. The motorcycle was amazing, and the pictures below really don’t do it justice. Yes, unfortunately translucent blue is no longer the primary color of the Tron light cycle, but I think they did a good job updating it for a new generation. The light cycle looks more futuristic and realistic now, but still harkens back to the original video game/move with its translucent blue highlights.

San Diego Comic Con 2009 - Flynn's Arcade: The Tron Legacy Light Cycle
San Diego Comic Con 2009 - Flynn's Arcade: The Tron Legacy Light Cycle Close-Up
Best of all, Tron Legacy will be released in Disney 3D! TR2N stars Michael Sheen, Olivia Wilde (who The Blot and Aly got to meet at SDCC) and Jeff Bridges, who reprises his role as Kevin Flynn from the original movie. Tron 2 will hit theaters sometime in 2010.

SDCC 09 - Believe Dero Resin Figures by Jermaine Rogers

Jermaine Rogers, one of The Blot’s favorite artists, had three awesome prototypes on display at San Diego Comic Con 2009. The first two were red and blue prototypes of an upcoming resin release of Rogers’ popular character Dero, entitled Believe. The Believe Dero resin figures looked incredible in person, and I couldn’t get over how big they were (around 8-10 inches in height). Jermaine let me hold one, and its craftsmanship was remarkable.

Blue and Red Prototype Believe Dero Resin Figures by Jermaine Rogers
Also on display was a very raw Veil: Specimen 129 resin prototype that is currently in development. It had something very funky looking in the middle of it (like a piece of coral), but what I really liked about the head is that it had a magnet at the bottom of it. As Jermaine explained it, the plan is to have a magnet placed at the top of the figure’s neck as well, so that the two pieces can latch together magnetically. It will give the resin figure some articulation, so that you will be able to rotate the figure's head while still having it attached to its resin body. How cool is that!?!

Prototype Veil: Specimen 129 Resin Head by Jermaine Rogers
Also on display was a pair of Jermaine Rogers x Vans sneakers. They looked pretty sick, so I had to take a pick. Not sure of the drop date on these kicks, but check out your local Vans store to reserve a pair!

SDCC 09 - Burn Notice and Psych Panel Freebies

There were two panels The Blot HAD to attend the Thursday of Comic Con, and thankfully we arrived in San Diego just in time to see both! Over the past 2-3 years I’ve become obsessed with the USA Network’s original programming, and by far my two favorite shows on USA are Burn Notice and Psych. So when I heard both would be at Comic Con I got really excited, especially when it was announced that the legendary Bruce Campbell and Corbin Bernsen would be there.

Burn Notice San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive Michael Westen 'Get Burned' Yellow T-Shirt
Both panels were awesome, but what really got everyone in Ballroom 20 excited was the free shwag both shows gave out to the fans in attendance. I had no idea how much of SDCC was dedicated to freebies, but everywhere I looked there was someone screaming for usually worthless free stuff. It’s like everyone, and I do mean everyone, is after free shwag at San Diego Comic Con. I guess it’s all part of the SDCC experience, and some of the best shwag I got this past weekend came from the Burn Notice and Psych Panels. First off, everyone at the Burn Notice panel got the awesome San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive Michael Westen yellow “Get Burned” t-shirt seen above.

San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive Psych Comic Book, 'Fake Psychic, Real Detectives' T-Shirt and Green Magic 8 Ball
But where we really racked up was the Psych panel which gave out SDCC 2009 exclusive Psych comic books, green Psych Magic 8 Balls (with official Shawn Spencer sayings), and Psych “fake psychic, real detectives” t-shirts. I’m not sure what I was more surprised about, that both t-shirts were printed on expensive American Apparel brand shirts, or that I saw the very same Psych tee on sale at the Hard Rock Hotel for $22!

San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive Psych Shawn and Gus Talking Bobblehead Set
Also making its debut at Comic Con 2009 was the Psych Shawn and Gus Talking Bobblehead Set. They did not have any of these cool bobbleheads for sale or to give away, but they did bring a set to show off to the crowd. What's great is that both bobbleheads actually look like James Roday and Dule Hill, the actors who portray Shawn and Gus on Psych. Each Psych talking bobblehead says 7 unique sayings, and the set retails for $35. You can pre-order the Psych Shawn and Gus Talking Bobblehead Set here.

SDCC 09 - Muttpop’s Tcho! Ohm Signing

One of the highlights of The Blot’s time spent at San Diego Comic Con 2009 was getting a Puro Tcho! figure (produced by Muttpop) doodled on by French artist Ohm. I ended up deciding to purchase a Malika figure at DKE’s SDCC booth, and turned it over to the French cartoonist. Handing an artist a blank figure like that is always super exciting, because you never know what it is going to look like when you get it back. This is especially true with Ohm, since I had never seen any of his custom figures before. But, he definitely didn’t disappoint!

Muttpop - Puro Tcho! Malika Vinyl Figure doodled on by Ohm
(click on the photo above for a more detailed look)

As you can tell from the picture above, Ohm killed cute, little Malika and turned her into a very cool looking skeleton. If you want to see more of Ohm’s 2009 San Diego Comic Con creations, check out this Muttpop.com blog post.

SDCC 09 - Hellboy, Universal Monsters & Horror Movie Mez-Itz Vinyl Figures

One of my favorite purchases from San Diego Comic Con 2009 is Mezco Toys’ SDCC exclusive Comic Book Edition Hellboy Mez-Itz. I now that I have seen one up close, I can honestly say these 6 inch figures are extremely detailed and well made, especially when compared to other toy lines of the same ilk. I was therefore excited to learn at Comic Con that Mezco will continue to expand its line of Hellboy Mez-Itz figures with the previously announced Abe Sapien Mez-Itz figure along with a Johann Krauss figure and multiple variant Hellboy figures.

Mezco Toyz - Hellboy II The Golden Army Mez-Itz Vinyl Figures
Mezco Toyz - Hellboy II The Golden Army and Hellboy Comic Mez-Itz Vinyl Figures
Not only that, but Mezco will be releasing a line of “Fear” themed figures that will include Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorheers, A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger, and Halloween II’s Michael Myers. Mezco’s Fear Mez-Itz will be hitting stores in November 2009.

Mezco Toyz - Zombie, Universal Monsters & Horror Movie Mez-Itz Vinyl Figures
But they aren’t stopping there. Mezco plans to continue to expand its line of 6” Mez-Itz figures by releasing a “Monsters” line, which will include Dracula, Frankenstein and two different Zombie colorways. These newly redesigned Mez-Itz figures look great, and should be a welcomed addition to everyone’s action figure and designer vinyl collections.

Best of all, Mezco is actively promoting its new vinyl figure as a great platform for artists to customize. The company had a ton of really impressive looking custom Mez-Itz figures on display at SDCC 2009, including the two Masters of the Universe inspired figures below. How great do these hand painted, custom He-Man and Skeletor Mez-Itz figures look!?!

SDCC 09 - MOTU Wun-Dar the Savage He-Man Action Figure

The Blot’s not a die hard Masters of the Universe fan anymore, but I thought this figure looked pretty neat. Evidently Wun-Dar the Savage He-Man action figure is a bonus figure available only to those collectors who join Matty Collector’s Club Eternia for 2010. If you’re already planning to collect the entire series of figures, how can you pass up this special offer? Especially since Wun-Dar comes with the greatest accessory ever, a freaking loaf of bread!

MattyCollector.com Exclusive Masters of the Universe Action Figures - Moss Man and the Club Eternia Exclusive Wun-Dar the Savage He-Man
Wun-Dar kinda looks like a custom I might of made as a kid, taking a He-Man body and giving him Zodac’s accessories. But it is cool Mattel has chosen to make him anyway and given him such great weapons like a power sword and bread. On a side note, how cool does the Moss Man figure next to Wun-Dar look? I used to love that action figure as a kid.

For those wanting more information on Club Eternia, click here. Basically it is the official home of the Masters of the Universe toy line, where membership guarantees you all of your favorite MOTU figures. By purchasing a membership to the 2010 Club Eternia you'll receive all 12 of the monthly MOTU figures released during the year, plus a club-exclusive Wun-Dar figure and special bonus map of Eternia. The total Subscription cost is $260 (12 figures at $20 each = $240, plus $20 membership fee).

SDCC 09 - Mattel AttiTUBES

The Blot is pleased to bring you a first look at Mattel’s potential new line of designer vinyl figures entitled AttiTUBES, which premiered at San Diego Comic Con 2009. It’s weird, as Hasbro moves more and more away from their line of Mighty Muggs vinyl figures, it looks like every other toy company is trying to get in on the designer toy craze. To be honest, I was shocked it took Mattel this long to introduce a figure like this.

Mattel's AttiTUBES
No word on if Mattel is even going to produce these AttiTUBES prototypes, but they are cool to look at. The three figures on the left (Mer-Man, Orko and Webstor) come from the world of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, but I have no idea who the two characters on the right are. One looks to be an astronaut, while the other is a generic looking scientist. You can be sure I’ll be scouring the internet to find out more information on these cute little quirky vinyl figures.

SDCC 09 - Marvel Mighty Muggs Are Back!

The only Mighty Muggs on display at Hasbro’s San Diego Comic Con 2009 were the soon to be relaunched Marvel Universe Mighty Muggs toy line. According to the display there are at least three Waves planned to come out this year!

Marvel Universe Mighty Muggs by Hasbro
Marvel Universe Mighty Muggs - Juggernaut and Deadpool
What most fans will really be excited about finally seeing is the debut of the highly anticipated Deadpool Mighty Mugg! Along with Deadpool and a slew of previously announced figures, Hasbro will also be producing Mighty Mugg versions of Juggernaut, War Machine and what looks like a 1st Appearance Wolverine.

Marvel Universe Mighty Muggs - War Machine
Marvel Universe Mighty Muggs - First Appearance Wolverine
The Blot is pretty excited to finally have firm confirmation that at least one line of Hasbro’s Mighty Muggs figures will continue. Here’s hoping to more Mighty Muggs news in the near future!

The Blot Heads To SDCC 2009

San Diego Comic-Con International logoAs you read this The Blot will be flying to San Diego for Comic-Con 2009. I hope to be blogging sporadically (mostly at night) over the next four days, but plan to be tweeting throughout my stay in San Diego. So, if you want to know what I’m doing, seeing and experiencing throughout my time at SDCC head over to Twitter.com/TheBlotSays. I’ve also gone ahead and added a Twitter widget to the top of The Blot Says… so that my latest tweets will always be at the top of the site. If you want constant updates and follow The Blot Says…’s RSS feed, I recommend stopping by the actual site to find out the latest!

Thanks again for reading The Blot Says… and be sure to come by the site at night over the next four days to check out what I hope will be some very cool pictures. Ok I've been totally slacking in the blogging department, sorry! Between all the goings on at the convention and the extra curricular activities around San Diego's Gaslamp District, I've been way too tired to blog at night. I haven't even gone through all my pics yet. But have no fear, I'll be sure to post a ton next week...

P.S. – If for some reason the Twitter widget above is not working, try refreshing your browser. If that doesn’t work, please shoot me an e-mail and let me know!

Iron Man 2 - First Look at Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow

Entertainment Weekly San Diego Comic Con Edition: July 24, 2009 Issue - Iron Man 2 Cover featuring Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark-Iron Man & Mickey Rourke as WhiplashThis week in Entertainment Weekly’s annual San Diego Comic-Con issue the weekly pop culture magazine unveiled the world’s first look at Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. the Black Widow from Iron Man 2. (link) While I prefer the character’s look from the 80’s (short hair and grey jumpsuit), I think the film has done a fantastic job transforming Johansson into the famed Soviet spy. While they didn’t get the hair exactly right, at least they included Black Widow’s trademark wrist-thingies.

Iron Man 2 - First Look at Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow
Filming of Iron Man 2 wrapped on Saturday, but fans will have to wait until May 7, 2010 to see the Marvel Comics sequel in theaters. (link) IM2 will once again be directed by Jon Favreau and stars Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle (taking over the role of James “Rhodey” Rhodes originated by Terrence Howard), along with Johansson and Mickey Rourke (as Whiplash).

Applehead Factory - SDCC 09 Exclusive Teddy Scares Messenger of Mayhem Set

This year’s San Diego Comic Con exclusive from Applehead Factory is the Messenger of Mayhem set, a tie in with their line of adorably terrifying teddy bears known as Teddy Scares. What’s cool about the Messenger of Mayhem limited edition set is that it is actually five different SDCC 2009 exclusives in one: a pink screen-printed messenger bag, a custom sketchbook/journal, a custom SDCC 09 patch, a blood pen, and a Teddy Scares pin.

Applehead Factory - San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive Teddy Scares Messenger of Mayhem Set
I know Teddy Scares has a pretty loyal following, so I am sure the Messenger of Mayhem messenger bag will be a huge hit at Comic Con. For those of you interested in purchasing this five piece set act fast, because only 100 were created. The Messenger of Mayhem messenger bag set can be yours for just $30 at the Applehead Factory SDCC booth #4923.

Super7’s SDCC 09 Exclusive Vinyl Figures

Super7 San Diego Comic Con 2009 LogoThe Blot was shocked when I realized yesterday that I had never blogged about one of my favorite designer toy companies, Super7. Now as readers of The Blot Says… you could probably figure out that I’m not that into kaiju vinyl and its U.S. equivalent, but I’ve always liked many of Super7’s soft vinyl creations (especially its Hooded Zombie figure). With that being said, I was still a little surprised to realize just how much of this year’s Super7 San Diego Comic Con exclusives I wanted to add to my collection. There are too many exclusives to mention here, but if you want to see them all head over to Super7’s website dedicated solely to its San Diego Comic Con 2009 exclusives.

Super7 San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive Big Sal by Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters
The one exclusive everyone seems to be talking about is Big Sal by Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters. My favorite part about Big Sal is the fact that he is cast in clear blue vinyl, but the $25 price tag is pretty nice too. This little guy is destined to sell out fast due to Olivas and Peters’ huge fan base, so be sure to show up to their signing scheduled for Thursday at 3pm at the Super7 SDCC booth #4729 very early.

Super7 San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive Monster Family Blank 3 Pack - Steven the Bat by Bwana Spoons, Holis by Le Merde & Rose Vampire by Josh Herbolsheimer
The Super7 SDCC09 exclusive I’m looking forward to the most is the Monster Family 3-pack, which includes unpainted, white figures of Steven the Bat, Holis and Rose Vampire. What’s really great about this exclusive 3-pack is that it is only being released on Saturday when each of the figures’ creators (Bwana Spoons, Le Merde and Josh Herbolsheimer respectively) will be on hand to sign and doodle away on these blank canvases. The Rose Vampire figure looks killer and I really like the new Steven the Bat mold. These three blank figures will only be sold as set for the ridiculously low price of $50 during the Monster Family signing at noon on Saturday, July 25th at the Super7 booth.

Super7 San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive Jade Mongolion by L'amour Supreme
There are a slew of other really cool figures, like L’amour Supreme’s Jade Mongolion (available all four days for $65 each) and Itokin Park’s Red Devil Lucha Bear (available Friday at noon for $65 each), so head over to the Super7 San Diego Comic Con 2009 website now to check them out.

Super7 San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive Red Devil Lucha Bear by Itokin Park
Also note that Super7 has scheduled most of their artists for signings at their SDCC 09 booth #4729, so collectors will definitely want to make a point of stopping by the Super7 booth at least once a day.

Chop Sabers - Star Wars Lightsaber Chopsticks

This has got to be one of the coolest Star Wars products ever and The Blot will definitely be trying to score some Chop Sabers next week at San Diego Comic Con. Produced by Kotobukiya, these SW lightsaber chopsticks will be making their worldwide debut at SDCC 09 next week.

Chop Sabers - Star Wars Lightsaber Chopsticks by Kotobukiya
“Suitable for eating sushi or defending the galaxy, the Luke Skywalker blue and Darth Vader red lightsaber chopsticks measure 9" long and its blades are cast in translucent material. The smaller 'children's sized' Yoda green lightsaber chopsticks measure approximately 7" long.” (link) Each set of Chop Sabers also include a translucent Star Wars logo chopstick rest.

Chop Sabers - Luke Skywalker Blue and Darth Vader Red Star Wars Lightsaber Chopsticks
The Chop Sabers will be available for purchase at SDCC next week, but after that there is no word on when these Chop Sabers will go on sale to the general public or their actual price. Hopefully they aren’t too expensive as they would make a great gift for that special sushi eating Star Wars fan in your life.

Boba-Def - Hi-Def Vinyl Figure Star Wars Colorway by kaNO

3 Hi-Def Colorways by kaNO - OG, Boba Fett-Star Wars, All Black
Star Wars + kaNO has The Blot very, very excited for this upcoming Hi-Def colorway. Officially being release next week at San Diego Comic Con 2009, this Hi-Def Star Wars colorway, also known as Boba-Def, looks sick! (link) As you all know, I love tribute colorways, so of course I’m all over this one. Boba Fett has always been one of favorite Star Wars characters (second only to Lando Calrissian naturally), and his easily identifiable green, red and grey color scheme is perfect for any vinyl figure’s alternative colorway.

Boba-Def - Hi-Def Star Wars Colorway Vinyl Figure by kaNO
kaNO’s Hi-Def Star Wars colorway has a limited run of just 150 figures and will retail for somewhere around $75-100. While being released at Comic-Con, Boba-Def is not a SDCC 09 exclusive. Only a limited supply of Hi-Def’s third colorway will be available at the Con. The remaining figures will go on sale to the general public soon after the convention. For those attending SDCC, you can pick up one of these very cool figures at the ToyQube booth #4837

Kidrobot - SDCC 09 Exclusive Wood Labbit by Amanda Visell & Frank Kozik

Kidrobot’s third and final exclusive of San Diego Comic Con 2009, the Wood Labbit, is a sick collaboration of two killer artists with very different styles. Amanda Visell takes the iconic Labbit into wild territory with this SDCC 09 Exclusive. This 5 inch woodland creature, the first Labbit designed by an artist other than creator Frank Kozik, roams the forest with an axe in place of his missing ear. After losing his ear to Kozeek, a deranged lumberjack, the Wood Labbit devises a quite appetizing plan for revenge.

Kidrobot - San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive Wood Labbit by Amanda Visell and Frank Kozik
The Amanda Visell x Kidrobot x Frank Kozik Wood Labbit will be released on July 25th exclusively at San Diego Comic Con at KR’s SDCC Booth #4529. The 5” vinyl figure has a limited edition production run of only 300 figures and will retail for $50 each.

Fortune 8 Inch Dunny & SDCC 09 Exclusive Luck 8 Inch Dunny by Mr. Shane Jessup

The Blot has been hesitant to discuss Kidrobot’s San Diego Comic Con 2009 exclusives because the company had not released any photos of the actual figures. All we’ve known for a few weeks now is that there would be three exclusives by Mr. Shane Jessup, Deph and a collaboration between Amanda Visell and Frank Kozik. Well all that changed today because "for the first time in over 3 years KR is finally revealing their San Diego Comic-Con exclusive releases BEFORE the Con!” (link)

Kidrobot - Gold Fortune 8 Inch Dunny & San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive Black Luck 8 Inch Dunny by Mr. Shane Jessup
On July 23rd Kidrobot will be releasing the first of its three SDCC 09 exclusives and it is an 8 inch black Luck Dunny by Mr. Shane Jessup. The 8” Luck Dunny is the chase colorway to MSJ’s new gold 8” Fortune Dunny (which will be released worldwide on the very same day). Both versions come with a red envelope and gold coin necklace, ensuring the tides of fate sway in your favor! I can’t begin to tell you how annoyed I am that I won’t be getting to San Diego until 11am on the 23rd, because all of the black 8 inch Luck Dunnys are sure to be long gone by then. If anyone wants to hook The Blot up please shoot me an email!

Kidrobot - San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusive by Mr. Shane Jessup Teaser
Both figures will retail for $75 each, but the black Luck Dunny will only be available at San Diego Comic Con 2009. So make sure you’re at the Kidrobot booth early (#4529) as all these figures are sure to sell out, especially with Mr. Shane Jessup on hand to sign them. The gold 8 inch Fortune Dunny has a limited edition production run of 1000 figures, while the black 8 inch Lucky Dunny is limited to just 200 figures.

Mr. Shane Jessup will be signing at Kidrobot’s SDCC Booth #4529 on Thursday, July 23th from 11am-1pm. There will be a limited number of Fortune and Luck Dunnys available for signing.
