SDCC 2020 First Look: Art of Sofubi Book by Mondo

Yesterday, Mondo held a rad San Diego Comic-Con 2020 panel entitled ““Lights, Kaiju, Action... DESTROY – ‘The Art of Sofubi’ + A Big, Big Announcement” where they showcased a new collection of officially licensed Godzilla merchandise, including statues, soft vinyl figures and tiki mugs. But what got The Blot really excited was news that Mondo is publishing a new book entitled “Art of Sofubi”! It will be released sometime next year (2021).

As Mondo stated, “Sofubi – “sofuto bineeru” (ソフトビニール) – are the otherworldly, jarring, often-disgusting/always-lovable soft vinyl Japanese toys that have captivated collectors all over the world. Two of our resident sofubi spelunkers – Spencer Hickman from Mondo Music and Michael Bonanno from Mondo Collectibles – are teaming up with photographer Robert Howell to explore unbelievable collections and rarities for next year’s Mondo Books release The Art of Sofubi.”

H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call Of Cthulhu Screen Print by Godmachine x Mad Duck Posters

Later this week Mad Duck Posters will be releasing this super rad screen print by Godmachine for H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call Of Cthulhu! The Blot is drooling over Godmachine’s linework in this killer new poster. As Mad Duck Posters explained, “We are excited to return to our Classic Literature Series this week with The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft! This story originally appeared in the pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1928. The Cthulhu character served as the center of the Lovecraft fictional universe, known as the Cthulhu Mythos. Godmachine created the amazing artwork, showing a unique take on Cthulhu as he begins to emerge symbolically from the head of his creator.”

H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call Of Cthulhu by Godmachine is a 12”x36” hand numbered screen print with metallic ink. The Regular Blue Edition is limited to 75 pieces and will retail for $50, while the Variant Bronze Edition is limited to 50 pieces and will retail for $60. Retroband “I can't stop the Monster I created” Solo Exhibition at Bottleneck Gallery

The Blot was super excited to learn that artist Aaron “Retroband” Moreno’s first ever solo gallery exhibition – “I can't stop the Monster I created” – will be taking place on Saturday, September 21st, at Bottleneck Gallery! Known for projecting ‘70s and ‘80s horror film-fueled fantasies onto his vinyl-cast MEATS sculpture, Moreno's showcase will focus on renditions of this disquieting form.

Manifesting through an impressive array of hand-painted/modified MEATS pieces, as well as an unprecedented selection of “raw” unpainted versions, “I can’t stop the Monster I created” will introduce the award-winning artist’s newest interpretation of his monstrous character, one inspired by Japan’s Ma-Ba Zombie toy line.

Also debuting at the exhibition is a 154-page retrospective titled “MEATS by Retroband”, an art book from CoART Publications. Comprised mainly of specially-commissioned photographs by Bryan Sargent, this full-color monograph details every hand-painted/modified MEATS rendition by Moreno from the form’s 2015 introduction until mid-2018. How cool is that!?!

With all available works sold on a first-come, first-served basis (initial limit of one piece and one book per person), Moreno’s “I can't stop the Monster I created” is a free-to-the-pubic exhibition hosted at the Bottleneck Gallery contemporary art space — 60 Broadway in Brooklyn, NY — on Saturday, September 21st, 2019 from 6-9pm.

How To Talk To Girls At Parties Movie Poster Screen Print by Fábio Moon x Mondo

Mondo has released a stunning new poster by Fábio Moon for A24's latest film, How to Talk to Girls at Parties! This film was adapted from a short story by Neil Gaiman, was directed by John Cameron Mitchell and stars Elle Fanning, Alex Sharp and Nicole Kidman. Its story is set in 1970s London and follows Enn and his friends, John and Vic, as they find themselves at a “party” that is actually a gathering of visiting aliens. The Blot can’t wait to see this one!
