Coraline Screen Print by Tom Whalen

Mondo - Coraline Disney Screen Print by Tom Whalen

The Blot loves me some Coraline! I bought the book when it first came out back in 2002 based on author’s Neil Gaiman’s name alone. But while the book is good, the LAIKA movie is great! I’m such a sucker for stop-motion animation and LAIKA did an incredible job translating the book to film. To commemorate Mondo’s release of the film’s soundtrack on vinyl today, Mondo is also releasing this new Coraline screen print by Tom Whalen. Boy are those freaking button eyes still creepy!

Coraline by Tom Whalen is an 18”x24” hand numbered screen print. Limited to 275 pieces, these movie posters will go on sale at the Mondo online store at a random time today, Tuesday, April 22nd, for $45 each.

Coraline Soundtrack Vinyl Record by Mondo with Cover Artwork by Michael De Pippo

Coraline Soundtrack Vinyl Record Cover Artwork by Michael De Pippo

Mondo is teaming up with LAIKA Animation Studios to release the Coraline soundtrack on deluxe limited edition vinyl for the very first time! LAIKA’s stop-motion animated feature film Coraline is one of The Blot’s all time favorite films, and I can’t wait to get my hands on this soundtrack. The film features music by Bruno Coulais, an original song by They Might Be Giants and cover artwork by artist Michael De Pippo.

Coraline Soundtrack Vinyl Record by Mondo

The soundtrack to Coraline is haunting and beautiful. With the help of the Budapest Orchestra and Choir behind him, Bruno Coulais captures the dark child-like imagination of the titular protagonist with a menace and aplomb. Without seeing the film you can follow the musical journey of the story from Coraline’s angsty reality, to her dreamy uneasiness, to the ultimate unravelling.

Coraline Soundtrack Black & White Swirl Vinyl Record Variant by Mondo

The Coraline original motion picture soundtrack is pressed on 2xLP 180 gram 12” black vinyl records, with randomly inserted black and white swirl vinyl variants randomly inserted into the run. Think of this as a blind box for vinyl records! Music lovers can pick up this awesome OST at a random time on Tuesday, April 22nd, at the Mondo online store for $32.

Coraline Official Trailer and Mystery Boxes

The official Coraline theatrical trailer has hit the internet and to no one’s surprise it looks really, really good. I don’t know what kind of advancements have been made in the technology used to film stop motion animation movies, but Coraline looks to have taken the art form to the next level. If you don’t believe me check out the film’s official trailer below:

On a side note, have you guys heard about or seen the mystery boxes sent out to bloggers around the world by the production company behind Coraline to promote the film’s release? Only fifty of these handmade chests were created and each one is different from the next in look and the contents inside. The boxes contain actual items used in the making of the film and include things such as hand written letters, photos and random props. This might just be one of the coolest movie promotions I’ve ever heard of! It's just too bad The Blot didn't make the cut.

Coraline Alphabet Promo Movie Posters

Coraline is an upcoming horror/fantasy stop-motion animation movie based on the children’s novel of the same name by British author Neil Gaiman. In the spirit of full disclosure, I purchased the novel Coraline the week it came out in 2002 and it has sat on my bookshelf ever since. I keep meaning to read it (I really do), and it’s not even that long so I don’t know what my problem. It’s supposed to excellent and has won numerous literary awards since it was released, and yet still it sits there.

Why you might ask then did I purchase Coraline almost seven years ago? Because of Neil Gaiman, end of story. The guy is point blank one of the best writers in the world. His Sandman series published by the DC Comics imprint Vertigo is considered a masterpiece and many literary critics who know way more about the subject than I do consider his comic book series worthy of comparison to some of the best written stories of the modern era. Because of that I’ve started to read Gaiman’s other written works, most of which are not in comic book form.

From the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, Coraline is the story of a young girl who walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life – a better version. But when this wondrously off-kilter, fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her “Other” parents try to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home. As you can tell from the story’s description, many have compared the movie to Alice In Wonderland and for good reason.
