Sons of Anarchy cast to reunite at Space City Comic Con!

We’re just 25 days away from Space City Comic Con 2016 in Houston, Texas, and The Blot can’t wait! That’s because this consistently great pop culture extravaganza is hosting the world’s largest cast reunion for one of my all time favorite shows, Sons of Anarchy! Fans of the iconic FX television show need to be making plans to visit Houston over Memorial Day weekend to participate in this once in a lifetime reunion. In fact, almost everyone in the show’s expansive cast will be there, including a super rare public appearance by Sons of Anarchy’s star Charlie Hunnam!!!

There are a ton of rumors swirling around as to why the SoA cast is reuniting for the first time since the show went off the air in 2014. The Blot’s even heard rumors that show creator Kurt Sutter will be in attendance to officially announce a Sons of Anarchy spin-off or prequel. Even if those truly are just rumors, this is an epic opportunity to meet your favorite cast members from an already classic TV drama.

Con Report: Space City Comic Con 2015

It’s really exciting to watch a small local con finally grow into itself. That’s what The Blot witnessed this past weekend as I attended vastly improved Space City Comic Con at NRG Park in Houston, Texas. The past few years Space City Comic Con really searched for an identity as it morphed from Space City Con to The Houston Con and then to Space City Comic Con. During that same time period it has changed locations even more than it changed names, and not always for the betterment of its attendees. But this year really showed what SCCC could be come.

I think the key to Space City Comic Con’s growth was its new location. Leaving hotels behind, it moved into NRG Park, which is a good size convention center. This coupled with a new set up for buying and/or picking up badges cut down on lines and wait time to get into the convention considerably (one of last year’s show’s biggest complaints). But what really made The Blot happy was the new layout of the dealer room, which included more vendors and comics than ever before! The celebrity autograph area was also really big and accommodating for lines and crowds.

The Blot had a great time talking with comic book creators throughout the weekend, including popular artists such as Norm Rapmund, Jonathan Glapion, Scott Kolins, Sean "Cheeks" Galloway, Walden Wong and Carlo Barberi. It was especially a treat to meet the iconic Allen Bellman, who was involved in the early days of Marvel Comics. All of the artists spoke glowingly of Space City Comic Con, many of whom had never been to Houston before. I think that’s especially key as a convention continues to grow by bringing in more and more creators and celebrity guests.

My only real complaint was how cramped the artists alley was, with the aisles way too narrow. You should have seen how I clogged each row with my large double stroller on Saturday. It made stopping to talk to artists and browse through their work almost impossible. That being said, I was blown away by the show’s guest list and really enjoyed meeting so many talented comic book professionals!

All in all The Blot had a fantastic time at Space City Comic Con, and I hope the show is able to build upon the success of this year’s show. I can really see the huge improvements the organizers made to the show this year and it really pad off! I can’t wait to see what SCCC has in store for us next year. I for one will definitely be back.

Power Rangers Time Force invades Houston’s Space City Comic Con This Weekend!

For the first time in 14 years all six Power Rangers from 2001’s Power Rangers Time Force season will be reunited at Space City Comic Con in Houston, Texas! Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fans from all four corners of the Earth will be converging on Houston this weekend at NRG Center to meet, take pictures with, get autographs and attend panels featuring the Power Rangers Time Force crew. In attendance will be Red Time Force Ranger Jason Faunt, Pink Time Force Ranger Erin Cahill, Green Time Force Ranger Kevin Kleinberg, Yellow Time Force Ranger Deborah Estelle Philips, Blue Time Force Ranger Michael Copon and Quantum Ranger Daniel Southworth. Go, Go, Power Rangers!

Along with this huge television reunion, Space City Comic Con will also be welcoming the original Star Trek captain William Shatner, Doctor Who's Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, Agent Carter's Chad Michael Murray, Arrow's Manu Bennett, Constantine's Matt Ryan, and most of the primary cast of Star Trek: Voyager to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary! SCCC will also have a who’s who of comic book creators such as Brett Booth, Allen Bellman, Ken Lashley, Scott Kolins, Norm Rapmund, Ryan Benjamin, Carlo Barberi, Marat Mychaels, and Sean “Cheeks” Galloway.

For this special event, SCCC will be hosting many of the series’ main cast, including Kate Mulgrew (Captain Kathryn Janeway), Robert Beltran (Chakotay), Ethan Phillips (Neelix), Robert Picardo (The Doctor), Tim Russ (Tuvok), Garrett Wang (Harry Kim) and Manu Intiraymi (Icheb). Along with panels, photo ops and singings, Space City Comic Con will also be hosting a very special Voyager 20th Anniversary ticketed event featuring all seven cast members on one stage!

Space City Con Winter 2014: Winter Is Coming to B5

Space City Con, Houston’s preeminent sci-fi and gaming convention, returns next weekend (January 3-5) at Galveston Island for its first ever winter edition! The con is now going biannual, meaning they will have a winter and summer show for the foreseeable future. To kick off their first winter event Space City Con went huge! They’re hosting an unofficial Babylon 5 20th Anniversary reunion with over 15 members of the show’s cast in attendance! Anyone who’s anyone from the B5 cast will be there, including The Blot’s personal favorite Mira Furlan (LOST’s Rousseau!).

But that’s not all. It wouldn’t be winter without a huge a couple of huge names from HBO’s Game of Thrones! Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo), Kristian Nairn (Hodor), Esme Bianco (Ros), Finn Jones (Loras Tyrell) Gethin Anthony (Renly Baratheon) and Miltos Yerolemou (Syrio Forel) will be in attendance. Fans will definitely want to have their Drogo and Renly Pop! vinyl figures handy to get signed by the actors they are based on!

Con Report: Space City Con 2013

The Blot was in no way prepared for the immense crowds at Space City Con 2013! I was lucky enough to be invited to cover the inaugural Space City Con last year, and it definitely had some growing pains. Every new comic-con has trouble getting the word out and attacking both die hard fanboys and casual fans to an unknown event. Plus, last year’s location at the Houston Galleria, the city’s biggest mall, allowed convention goers to come and go too freely. But wow, what a difference a year makes!

Space City Con felt twice as big this year with a crowd ten times as large. I don’t know what the convention’s promoters did to increase awareness of the event, but they did an amazing job! At times last year SCC seemed almost empty, but at certain points this year I actually had trouble navigating the show room floor. And considering the convention actually moved away from the center of the city it was extremely impressive they were able to draw such large crowds. Now the show wasn’t perfect, but for just its second year Space City Con has made huge improvements.

I think the biggest drawing power of this year’s convention was its celebrity guests. Fans were lining up to meet an impressive line-up of Star Trek veterans, Stargate stars, former Power Rangers, Doctor Who's Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy, and Firefly’s Jewel Staite. It was true geek nirvana! Personally, The Blot was extremely excited to meet Staite and Walter Koeing from Star Trek: The Original Series. What a legend!

The convention also had a huge influx of cosplay this year, rivaling almost any comic convention in Texas. There was a huge contingency from Star Wars 501st Legion, and I couldn’t get over how many young people were in attendance wearing Star Trek costumes. Even with the new movies I didn’t think there were die hard Trekkes under the age of 30. But the best costume I heard about was a young woman dressed as Ice from Justice League International!!! The Blot’s still ticked I didn’t get to see that one in person. I did get to see one X-Men fan in a killer Jubille costume though, which I loved.

My highlight of the show was definitely meeting superstar inker Art Thibert. Hearing stories about his time in the comic book industry and his new graphic novel, which was funded through Kickstarter, was awesome. It’s also great being able to flip through an artist’s portfolio and seeing tons of pages of original artwork, especially when you own so many of the published comics they came from.

The biggest surprise coming out of Space City Con 2013 was the show was becoming biannual! During the convention the show’s organizers announced they would not be hosting a Winter Edition Space City Con the first weekend of January, just four months after Space City Con 2013! Even better still, the show’s first celebrity guest to be announced is be Jason Momoa from Game of Thrones and 2011’ Conan reboot!!! GoT fans from around the southwest are sure to be flocking to Houston this winter to meet the Dothraki Khal Drogo!!! Can’t wait to find out who else will be at the Winter Edition of Space City Con 2014.

Space City Con 2013: The Final Frontier

It’s hard to believe it’s August is almost here, which means it’s almost time for Houston’s 2nd annual Space City Con! If you’re a fan of sci-fi, especially Star Trek, and live anywhere in or around Texas then you’ll definitely want to plan a trip to Houston August 2nd-4th. This new con has put together an impressive list of celebrity guests, including Doctor Who's Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy, Firefly’s Jewel Staite and more Star Trek cast members than you can share a stick at!

This year SCC is hosting Walter Koeing from TOS, John de Lancie and Denise Crosby from TNG, and Robert Picardo and Tim Russ from Voyager. There’s also 8 different Mighty Morphin Power Ranger cast members and a couple of big names from Babylon 5. Personally The Blot is more excited about the artists and comic creators at this year’s show including animator Rich Arons, Keu Cha and Art Thibert! It should be a fantastic show and The Blot will hopefully be there throughout the weekend. Hope to see you there!

Mountain Goats Survivors Choice 2012 West Coast Tour Posters by Robert Wilson IV

Last weekend The Blot got to meet the talented Robert Wilson IV at Space City Con 2012. I was first introduced to this Dallas artist’s work a few years ago when he designed a tour poster for Adam WarRock, which is still probably my favorite Adam WarRock gig poster. Robert had the two tour posters he designed for the Mountain Goats’ 2012 Survivors Choice West Coast Tour at his booth and I was blown away by both the screen prints’ intricate designs and colors.

Robert explained he was actually introduced to the Mountain Goats on Twitter, where they bonded over their mutual love of DC Comics’ Kamandi. Robert then used Kamandi’s theme of a post-apocalyptic future as inspiration when designing these two prints for the Mountain Goats recent west coast mini tour. Both prints proved so popular, they sold out just a few days into the Mountain Goat’s tour! Now the only way to get your hands on one is through the Nakatomi online store (Tim Doyle’s Nakatomi printed these posters for RW4 and the Mountain Goats).

Each Mountain Goats 2012 West Coast Tour Poster by Robert Wilson IV is an 18”x24” screen print with florescent pink ink, and comes signed and numbered by the artist. Con Report: Space City Con 2012

This past weekend The Blot attended the inaugural Space City Con here in Houston, Texas and loved every minute of. The first year of any show can be challenging, but Space City Con really took me back to the types of hotel comic book conventions I grew up attending back before most comic-cons turned into pop culture extravaganzas. The Blot wasn’t sure what to expect last weekend, but I was pleasantly surprised by the show’s mixture of celebrities, all star comic book artists, and vendors of everything from comics and toys to t-shirts and handmade dolls.

The highlight of the show was definitely getting to meet legendary X-Men artist Art Adams. I was like a kid in a candy store watching him draw, and was blown away by the Booster Gold sketch he did for me. It was also great catching up with the Loyal K.N.G. crew, as well as Texas artists Joe Eisma (Morning Glories) and Nick Pitarra (Manhattan Projects). But what I really love about attending cons is meeting new people like Khoi Pham, Cody Schibi and Robert Wilson IV. All three were so gracious to spend a few minutes chatting with me about their craft and the creative process. Having no talent myself, it’s always cool to pick such talented people’s brains.

While Space City Con was all about comic books for The Blot, the star of the convention seemed to be the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ original Green Power Ranger Jason David Frank. Everyone I talked to was raving about his panels and how great it was to meet him. Little did I know Frank actually lives in Houston! I missed out on the whole Power Rangers craze, but after this show I can’t deny the series’ culture impact. Everywhere I looked last weekend people were dressed up as their favorite Power Ranger. I seriously had no clue how big Power Rangers was to people in their 20s and early 30s.

My one regret from Space City Con 2012 is not getting to meet Star Trek’s Nichelle Nichols. I don’t know how it happened, but I kept missing all of her appearances. One of the true legends of the small screen and I missed her! Although I did see an awesome cosplayer in an authentic Star Trek IV admiral uniform. All in all, for its first convention Space City Con was great. It was well organized and had a great line up. Clearly there is always room for improvement, and hopefully Space City Con 2013 will build on the foundation of this year’s success.

The Blot's heading to Space City Con!

This weekend The Blot’s heading to Houston’s newest pop culture extravaganza, Space City Con! For the longest time Houston has been a sorely underserved market for comic book conventions, especially when you consider it’s the 4th biggest city in the US. But that’s changed in recent years with the launching of a number of really successful comic-cons in Houston and Austin, proving not only is this region yearning for these types of shows, but it can support multiple conventions throughout the year.

Envisioned as a "geek festival with free parking," Space City Con is looking to instill a love of comics, Sci-fi and fantasy in the next generation. This weekend’s event will offer a robust mix of authors, artists, sci-fi, fantasy, comics, gaming, fan group networking, literature, writing workshops and more, in a venue meant to be more approachable to families and children. This year inaugural event features a killer line up including Star Trek’s Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura from ST:TOS), the original Green Power Ranger Jason David Frank, Cody Schibi, comic book artists Khoi Pham, Art Adams, Whilce Portacio, Joe Eisma, Nick Pitarra, and Robert Wilson IV, and authors R.A. Salvatore, Tracy and Laura Hickman, and Steve Jackson of SJ Games!

Space City Con takes place this weekend (August 10-12) at the Westin Galleria, which is connected to Houston’s Galleria Mall. With free parking and tons of events, what more could you ask for? See you there!
