Heath Ledger Found Dead In His NYC Apartment

Initially, the New York Times was reporting that the apartment Ledger was found dead in was owned by fellow celebrity Mary Kate Olsen, but that Heath had been living there. That erroneous report has since been denied by Olsen’s publicist. (link) For more details on how his death was discovered please click here, here or here.
Here are some interesting quotes from an AP article appearing on USA Today.com:
Curiosity about Ledger's final performance will likely stoke further interest in the summer blockbuster. Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan said this month that Ledger's Joker would be wildly different from Nicholson's. "It was a very great challenge for Heath," Nolan said. "He's extremely original, extremely frightening, tremendously edgy. A very young character, a very anarchic presence that taps into a lot of our basic fears and panic."
Ledger told The New York Times in a November interview that he "stressed out a little too much" during the Dylan film and had trouble sleeping while portraying the Joker, whom he called a "psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy."
"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," Ledger told the newspaper. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going." He said he took two Ambien pills, which worked for only an hour, the paper said. (link)

What a sad, sad loss. I’m at a loss for words considering I’ve blogged so much about Ledger and his upcoming role as The Joker in The Dark Knight the past few months. He was a very talented actor and still had a long, distinguished career ahead of him. I have always enjoyed his work and was really looking forward to his latest performance. I really hope his death is not drug related, but as we’ve seen too many times before, for some reason drugs and young performers seem to go hand in hand. It's such a shame too, because we’ve already lost so many talented young artists to drugs and it doesn’t seem to be letting up any time soon. As details leak out, I’ll update this post with more information.

Reese Witherspoon Refuses Sex Scene With Vince Vaughn

The Blot will tell you what’s too much for him, the fact that Reese Witherspoon can’t get over herself. I don’t know what Vince Vaughn is like in person, but I can tell you what he’s like on screen…pure comedy gold. It’s been a long time since the man made a bad film, probably since he tried to go all serious actor on us and made the horrific Psycho remake and those two kinda boring movies with Joaquin Phoenix, Clay Pigeons and Return To Paradise. Can any of our readers tell me what the last two movies Reese Witherspoon has made? If not it’s ok, you like most of America never saw them. They were Penelope with Christina Ricci and James McAvoy and Rendition with her new beau Jake Gyllenhaal. It just seems like Vaughn’s style connects with the American public while Reese is in sort of a career rut. So my advice to her is to try and go with the flow more and pull out a winner because your career could use the rebound. You can’t live off Legally Blonde and Walk The Line forever.
For those interested, Four Christmases centers around Witherspoon and Vaughn’s married couple running “the Christmas Day gauntlet as they strain to visit their divorced parents’ four separate households.” (link) Four Christmases is directed by Seth Gordon (King of Kong) and also stars Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Dwight Yoakam, Mary Steenburgen, Jon Favreau and Tim McGraw. Olsen Twins and Uncle Jesse Hit The Town

The thought of Danny Tanner and Uncle Jesse out on the town drinking with sweet little Michelle doesn't freak me out near as much as the thought of Bob Saget, one of the dirtiest comedians around, and John Stamos (ER) going out to party with two girls, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, they've known since they were babies.

The Thin Red Line Between News and Gossip
1. Buffy No More?

2. Acclaimed Filmmaker Kevin Smith Finds His Leads

Variety is reporting that The Blot’s favorite writer/director and creator of all things ViewAskew (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma) Kevin Smith has cast the lead roles in his new film Zack & Miri Make A Porno. The role of Zack will be played by newly christened comedy super star Seth Rogen (Knocked Up, Superbad, 40-Year-Old Virgin) and the role of Miri will be played by Elizabeth Banks (Invincible, 40-Year-Old Virgin). Smith hasn’t had much success with movies not centered in the ViewAskew universe, i.e. Jersey Girl, but hopefully this film will be able to showcase Smith’s unique style of writing and comedy genius. 4. Celebrity Apprentice Contestants Announced

You know a show has hit rock bottom when it’s draining the Reality TV landscape for contestants. At one time The Apprentice was on top of the Neilson ratings…that time has definitely passed us by. I don’t know if this counts as “celebrity” in your book, but bringing back first season contestant/Surreal Life cast member Omarosa just doesn’t cut it. Stephen Baldwin is kind of a name, but after seeing him embarrass himself on Celebrity Mole for a few seasons his allure is pretty tarnished too. About the only person I’m excited to see compete is former heavyweight boxing champ Lennox Lewis, who always came across as a pretty bright guy. If you’d like to read through the full list of contestants, which includes the likes of Kiss front man Gene Simmons (who also has his own reality TV show, Gene Simmons Family Jewels, on A&E) and Olympic gold medalist softball pitcher Jennie Finch, you can check out the Yahoo article here.
Thanks to Whitney at Pop Candy for a few of these headlines...you can find headlines like these every week day at USA Today's Pop Candy blog.

Headlines That Baffle The Blot

Many of The Blot’s fans know that I have, for many years now, had a great admiration for the Olsen Twins’ work. The Blot has tried to support them through thick and thin…the rumors of anorexia, drug use, excessive partying, etc. The Blot’s support has never waned. Until now that is. This is just gross. Maybe it’s all in my head, but the thought of LiveStrong Lance with little Michelle Tanner gives me the heebie jeebies.
2. Reid Has No Plans to Leave Eagles Despite Judge’s Criticism (Link)Is Andy Reid, head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, the only one who doesn’t get it? Given the judge may have been out of line with some of the things he said and maybe he didn't know the whole story, but still, these two kids of Reid’s seem pretty out of control and I have to think his credibility with his players is at an all time low. If a player was caught dealing drugs, brandishing weapons, driving under the influence and smuggling drugs into prison I’m pretty sure they would be banned from the NFL for life. Obviously it wasn’t Coach Reid committing these offenses but I have to imagine it is taking its toll on him, the team and the entire organization. The best thing he can do is take a temporary leave of absence to help his children and let the Eagles try to find their way through their already tumultuous season.
3. Sources say Alex Rodriguez was looking for a $350 Million Dollar Deal from the Yankees (Link)Say what!?! Is this guy kidding? A-Rod is good, no wait he’s great. On second thought he is absolutely amazing. But no way, no how is this guy worth $350 Million Dollars. I’d feel better giving that much to a stud pitcher. At least a pitcher, in theory, can win a game on his own. A-Rod is still the player who has brought a cloud of losing with him to every team he’s been on since leaving Seattle. He should try winning a championship before talking about those staggering kinds of numbers. That contract would have been the most ridiculous American sports contract in the history of sports contracts. Besides, A-Rod definitely doesn't need to give the general public another reason to dislike him.
4. Music Label EMI Will Crack Down On Artists (Link)
While it’s probably a good thing one of the big music labels has finally decided to clean house and try to right its sinking ship, I would file this headline under “Too Little, Too Late.” It’s great that EMI wants to crack down on advances and crack down on artists they view as not pulling their own weight, but much of the blame and outrageousness of how artists are paid and dealt with can be attributed right back to the record labels. No other industry is handled as horribly as the music industry and these same labels had no problem doing it this way for decades. Of course back then the labels used these same business practices to routinely screw over their talent and make millions off them in the process. Now that albums don’t sell as well the artists are to blame? Seems to me there is still a demand for good music, just not what the music labels are trying to sell.
