Later this week Mad Duck Posters will release a killer new movie poster for the timeless 1925 film The Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney by talented Texas based artist Timothy Pittides! As Pittides explained “I have been waiting to do a poster for The Phantom of the Opera for over a year. It is my favorite film from the silent film era and my sketchbook has been busy with concepts relating to the film. I wanted to do something different than the other posters for the film that artists have been releasing. The first order of business was NOT to include the Phantom as the Red Death. That ship has sailed. Second, I wanted a design to fit alongside my poster for my second favorite silent film, Nosferatu.”

Pittides continued, “Third, I didn’t want to focus on Erik himself. I believe the story didn’t focus on him as much as it did Christine. Christine was the key to everything, his love, his rage, and his eventually downfall. And on her side, she had to endure so much and did what she had to do for love. I took the mirror as central theme and wanted to portray a feeling of dread, beauty and sadness. I hope this comes across.” The Phantom of the Opera by Timothy Pittides will be available in two editions.

“The Road To Ruin” Screen Print by Timothy Pittides

Later today, Grey Matter Art will be releasing the third and final print in Timothy Pittides VICES series based on propaganda films from the 1930s and 1940s. “The Road To Ruin” is a propaganda film about the true gateway drug, alcohol. Released in 1934, the film tells a tale of a young woman who gets in with the wrong crowd, and begins a journey down the spiral of booze, drugs and sex. As Pittides explained, “With this poster I wanted to finish up the whole “See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil” undertone I began with both Reefer Madness and Cocaine fiends. Here, we have the demon emerging from her glass of devil’s brew, throwing red rose petals into the poor girl’s face.”

As the Texas based artist explained, “Return of the Living Dead ranked itself as my favorite film the first time I saw it back when it first debuted on HBO in the late 80s. I was immediately engulfed in its dark humor and extremely unique zombie and production designs. This is my Star Wars. So being that it is its 30th anniversary, I knew I had to give it a proper tribute. I had four concepts that I wanted to get across: Sexy, Punk, Zombie and Gritty. So I took those ideas and created something I hope all ROTLD fans can look at proudly and relate to.”

Nosferatu Screen Print by Timothy Pittides

Artist Timothy Pittides and Bottleneck Gallery are teaming up to release a killer new movie poster screen print for the iconic vampire film, Nosferatu! When talking about this exciting new movie poster, Pittides explained, “When I decided to tackle Nosferatu, I wanted to make sure that it was something different. There is so many great prints and posters done for the film that hit their mark. From Ken Taylor's beautiful art deco styled collage, Brandon Schaefer's artistically crafted creepiness to Christopher Cox's likeness driven design, artists have been paying a great tribute to arguably the greatest horror film ever made. I first started with making the vampire was represented, not just in likeness but in tone, taking the design on cover of the vampire book Hutter finds in his room at the inn.”

Nosferatu by Timothy Pittides is an 18”x24” hand numbered screen print. This design will be released in two very cool editions: Dawn and Dusk, both limited to just 40 pieces each and will retail for $35 each. The Dawn Edition is printed on French Speckletone Kraft paper, while the Dusk Edition is printed on French Carbon Copy Krafttone paper and features metallic silver ink. Timothy provided some really cool background info on the two editions: “I decided the film could be represented two different ways, the speckletone kraft being used for its antique look as well as the look of day scenes in the colorized version of the film and the carbon copy paper for its specks of browns and reds and of course representing the black and white of the original film. This two choices give people the choice on how they feel personally to the film.”

Grey Matter Art is set to release its newest screen print, and first ever poster based on a novel! Check out the fantastic American Psycho by artist Timothy Pittides, which was authorized by the book’s author, Bret Easton Ellis. “American Psycho” by Timothy Pittides is an 18”x24” 4 color signed and numbered screen print on 100lb French Speckle-tone Kraft. Pittides gave a really interesting backstory to this amazing print: “After my first initial reading, I couldn’t shake the feeling of uneasiness. I felt dirty, and I LOVED IT. Bret Easton Ellis weaved a story so shocking and so important it could not be ignored. I have read this great book so many times, I felt a part of the narrative. When the time came where I felt I could do some justice to it, I had to strike and reach out to Mr. Ellis and see if I was worthy enough to create a visual for his book. When I received the go ahead, I was not ready for where this would take me. Numerous concepts, 60 hours of work completed on one concept, only to stare at it in its final inked form, and HATE it. It was good, but not good enough, it didn't convey what I wanted. I placed it aside, taking some concepts from it and finally creating these piece which I feel conveys the tone and attitude of the words Mr. Ellis so viciously typed. Patrick Bateman's descent into insanity and depravity is only made worse by the materialistic world in which he is so desperately trying to be a part of. That hate and venom is represented here in his business suit, his status symbol, slowly turning him into a wild animal. I am so pleased Grey Matter Art is willing to release this authorized print for me and I cannot thank them enough. But the true thanks goes to Emory Johnson at Random House, Amanda Urban at ICM partners and of course Bret Easton Ellis himself.”
