Bottleneck Gallery is ending its week-long ode to San Diego Comic-Con 2020 with Raid71’s online art show dedicated to Batman: The Animated Series! As Raid tells it: “While researching Batman: The Animated Series I stumbled across this brief for the background artists. ‘Night in Gotham City. Only the faintest of rays of moonlight break through the steamy darkness. Shadows are black, twisted, and frightening. The thick night air carries many sounds: breaking glass, sputtering neon, harsh, bitter voices, and police sirens. Always police sirens. Most of Gotham’s daytime inhabitants have long since fled to the suburbs or into security-gated apartments. This is not a safe place after dark.’ Add in some 1930’s Art Deco architecture and I had all the information I needed to create the posters. (Naturally I rewatched every episode!)”

This Thursday, Grey Matter Art will be releasing an officially licensed screen print for the 1993 DC Comics animated film, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, by designer and illustrator Bruce Yan! As GMA explained, “From a highly compelling storyline to fine voice acting, as well as art-deco and gothic design elements, this movie has gone on to become a true fan favorite. Bruce Yan gives us an excellent portrayal of the film with our beloved caped crusader overlooking Gotham City.”

Batman: The Animated Series Wave 5 6” Action Figures

DC Comics’ celebration of Batman’s 75th Anniversary cannot be stopped! It continues with a super-sized fifth wave of their awesome new line of Batman: The Animated Series 6” action figures! This television themed toy line is based on Bruce Timm’s original character designs from Batman: The Animated Series and the New Batman Adventures. Each figure is based on Mattel’s original 4.5” tall with limited articulation figures, and been enlarged to a whopping 6” scale (and 24 points of articulation).

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm Screen Print by Phantom City Creative

The first and only Batman: The Animated Series movie to get a theatrical release turns 20 years old this Christmas. The Blot can’t believe it’s already been 20 years since this fantastic movie hit theaters. Sadly, Mask of the Phantasm is still considered by most to be a utter flop due to its box office tally. Directed by Bruce Timm, written by Paul Dini, and featuring the voice talents of Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as The Joker, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was the beginning of a near flawless run of animated Batman films and series that ended with Batman Beyond in 2001.

In honor of the film’s 20th Anniversary Mondo is throwing the film a belated birthday party with a 35mm screening at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz on January 7th. As part of the celebration, Mondo will be bringing two new limited edition prints by Phantom City Creative for sale at the screening! It may be time for The Blot to plan his first trip to Austin in 2014! Tickets for the screening will be available for purchase here on December 24th!
