Mondo To Release Three New Godzilla Screen Prints by Oliver Barrett & Tom Whalen

When SXSW was cancelled, Mondo sadly also canceled their Godzilla group art show. This celebration of the King of the Monsters will now be released online, with screen prints gradually being released over the next few weeks. To kick things off, Mondo is releasing three Godzilla posters by artists Oliver Barrett and Tom Whalen! All three movie posters seen here will go on sale at 11am CDT today, Thursday, March 19th, at The Drop on MondoShop.com.

Godzilla by Oliver Barrett is a movie poster for the 1954 film that changed everything. As Mondo explained, “It breathed atomic life into an iconic character that inspired monster kids all over the world, and whose legacy spans over 60 years, 30+ films, and across toys, comic books, and video games. With Godzilla in all his destructive glory, Oliver's poster is about as perfect a hat tip as you could hope for for the iconic first film.”

Barrett seriously killed it with this design! I especially love his use of black and white in this poster and the way the two colors are juxtaposed against each other.

American Splendor Movie Screen Print by Oliver Barrett

I saw this American Splendor screen print by Oliver Barrett yesterday and knew there’d be a lot of fellow comic book fans out there who would really appreciate its realistic beauty…just like Harvey Pekar’s now classic series American Splendor. This illustration was originally a poster Barrett did for All City Media’s Redrawn show from late 2010. Originally released as a giclee, here’s your chance to own a variant of that poster as a 5 color 36”x24” screen print on Mr. French’s Old Green Speckletone paper. The American Splendor screen print can be purchased from Oliver’s online store here for $45 each.

In honor of its tenth anniversary and the opening of a new studio, All City Media held the Redrawn art show, an exhibition featuring different artists where each artist literally redrew movie posters of films All City had worked on over the years. Oliver was asked to be part of this show, and recreate the movie poster of one of his favorite films, American Splendor.

American Splendor is one of The Blot's favorite films, and I love the fact that Harvey still lives on in this amazing movie. And now, he can live on on fans' walls around the globe! According to Oliver, “the combination of Paul Giamatti as Harvey Pekar and the real Harvey Pekar being on screen at the same time, often breaking the fourth wall, is one of my favorite aspects of American Splendor. This led me to develop the poster around the idea of the two Harveys. Because the film is about a pioneer of comic book culture, I felt drawing the two Harveys was the appropriate treatment for the poster.”
